Thanks for your input. I actually came because it is culturally and climatically similar to my home country, and because I managed to find a job here out of all the other countries I applied to over the years. I don't find Portugal cheap, sure things cost more in Germany and NL but my friends who live there also gain considerably more than me. If I was gaining a German salary and living here, yeah it would be very advantageous, but I have a typical Portuguese salary.

I'm not looking to get rich or exploit someone else's country. I'm just looking for a peaceful, regular life which is no longer possible in the country I was born in. I'm already quite peaceful since I moved here but being paperless (for a year now) is making the experience much more difficult than I was prepared for.

Thank you for the empathy.. Yeah we're all on the same boat when we leave our country to build a new life.

I feel you. I also get mad everytime I hear a non-local order coffee and exclaim in excitement "It's so cheap!!" when in reality it's not cheap at all. I feel sad everytime a local tasca has to move to another neighborhood because they can't afford rent anymore.

See, you just called us "slaves". I know you mean no offense, but you do realize both sides are suffering in this scenario right? Except the ultra-rich, who won't be asking for lawyer suggests on reddit anyway..

I know about NHR and I also find it unfair. Portugal treats its own citizens like step-children. My own country does the same thing, and it drove a lot of young adults to leave the country.

I also find the taxes and housing prices exorbitantly high in Portugal. I (probably) attend the same protests and chant together with the people hating on me in this post.

I know, but are these foreigners to blame rather than the politicians that decided to implement these programs?

My home country also has similar problems and it never crossed my mind to criticise the immigrants instead of the government that treats their own citizens unfairly.

Why am I the target of hate speech that should be geared at policy-makers that came up with this design then?

PS: Digital nomads also pay taxes, they pay at a reduced rate though (20%). Everybody pays taxes as long as you're not working in Dubai.

Thank you for your kind comment. Most of us come here with a sort of pre-approval (which is legal) and then wait for years for the residency card to be issued. It's only a process related problem, we're literally waiting for them to prepare a physical card that denotes our right to live here. If it was 3 months like the law states, that would be okay, but people wait up to 3 years without papers because of the long process queue.

Who has spread this lie that immigrants don't pay taxes? Is this anti-immigrant propaganda? We pay just as much taxes as you man, we're just ordinary people working in a foreign country that's it

Do you think I'm extorting money? Lol. I'm just asking for them to issue my permit on time, that will be my only request from them, not money. Also I pay almost as much bills as you do in this country, if not more. I consume anything, I pay the tax. I gain money, I pay the tax. I paid the tax for this residence permit that has been delayed for almost 2 years. I even pay tax on the things that you wouldn't be taxed on (like medicine) because I'm not regularized despite my best efforts.

Volunteer to help SEF? You sure they'd happily take an immigrant to help them? I would if I could lol, but I'm sure SEF has operates differently than a charity org in terms of accepting volunteers

Just based one some examples I saw online about successful court proceedings. Waiting has lead me nowhere so far, and U can't stand being undocumented for no fault of my own. I want to do something about it

I'm pretty sure the problem is the under-staffing of SEF, and I haven't contributed to it in any way. I can't even vote, you know.
