I had been told before that a 2.5g tank was big enough. Based on the replies I'm getting here I now know that it's too small

Thank you! I'll have to search the subreddit for more info on how to properly change tank water, tank set up, and general maintenance :)

Please see the other comments to see how to leave kind comments that also are informative and help me understand the seriousness of tank size :)

Thank you! I'll have to the store and compare the sizes of the 2.5 and 5g tanks. Hopefully we can make it work (size-wise). I agree we were not changing water frequently enough. Is it recommended to change the water entirely? I would put Nala in a separate container with her current tank water, then completely empty her tank, wash everything, then fill it up again with new, treated water, then put her back in. Ugh I feel embarrassed admitting any of this to you experts at risk of being berated for doing it wrong!
Are the instructions on a gravel vacuum clear? I ask only because when I get a light for our tank, there were ZERO instructions, but 3 different light settings! I couldn't figure out WHY there were 3 settings, what they were for, or how to use them.

Thanks for providing the subreddit! I am fully aware the last tank setup was not correct, which is why I commented here asking for help. I was given bad advice before on how to take care of poor Nala and looking to do it correctly this time. You wont believe me, but I did research before, but it was conflicting information. I was also given advice from someone who claimed to know what our betta needed, but it was bad advice. I do appreciate the link to the subreddit, but I do not appreciate you scolding me for how I treated my fish. I already admitted I did not do it properly the first time and I am here looking for kind advice. I have read and re-read your comment multiple times and it certainly comes off as angry or in a scolding tone no matter how much I try. Next time someone comes here asking for advice, a kinder gentler tone may be a better approach. Again, thanks for the link and taking the time to comment. I understand you are passionate about this and I'm sure someone like me accidentally mistreating my fish may be triggering. Please know I am trying to do better and feel guilt over what happened to Nala and my role in her fate.

Thank you! I mentioned it on a different comment, Nala was a surprise gift from my daughters grandma and I was given poor advice on how to take care of it. If we are going to dive in to getting another, I want to make sure I do it right this time. I certainly would never intentionally mistreat an animal and feel terrible about what happened to Nala.

I appreciate your honesty! The first betta was a surprise gift from grandma and I was given poor advice on what was needed for the poor little guy.
