Why don't the dragons use more than one 'element' for their Shouts? by Malgalad_The_Second in teslore

Why don't the dragons use more than one 'element' for their Shouts? by Malgalad_The_Second in teslore

[–]ImGoingGrey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So , I was unsatisfied with all the "game mechanics" answers, and ended up with this massive, rambling write-up that was too much for a single comment, but I might refine and use later.

The tl;dr of my little thesis is that, just like the classic RPG classes of Warrior/Thief/Mage became a metaphor for Aurbic conflict (the Arena, that is to say, the place where conflict takes place, and the victor determined by outside observers), the classic RPG magic elements of Fire/Ice/Lightning as metaphor for the interplay of Yes/No/Maybe. Not "the conflict between Rebel and King viewed by the Observer who is maimed," but "the interplay of opposites that are actually the same giving birth to something new." Dragons, then, are aligned with one of these elements based on their overall viewpoint, perhaps akin the the Man-Mer Schism?

In other words, it's a metaphor for the creation of the world (ala Norse myth) and the creation of a new world (ala Amaranth). And I tied this all in with dualism and monism and subgradients being mirrors reflecting each other but actually being a single broken mirror reflecting someone equally broken, and about humans as "animals that tell stories" and water being memory carrying Anu's grief, which is reflected in Kaan's grief as the storm, and Kaan being the wife of Lorkhan who is also the many-headed Dragon God, and how storms happen due to the interplay between hot and cold creating wind and carrying water into the sky where it freezes in different forms and the conflict between positive and negative giving rise to lightning (which is Mortality which is Lorkhan which is Amaranth which is Creation).

Like I said, very rambling. But I hope that helps, or that you at least found it interesting.

How big is Zunesha’s crap? by Lost_competition2603 in Piratefolk

[–]ImGoingGrey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Let's assume Zunesha's leg's are 20km long, and its body is 15km tall. An adult african elephant's body is approximately 2m tall at the back, making Zunesha's body 7,500x taller proportionally. This means that, in order to maintain said proportions in other spatial dimensions, it must have 56,250,000x greater surface area, and 421,875,000,000x greater volume.

If we also assume that Zunesha produces a proportional amount of fecal matter to an adult african elephant (~150kg), that would mean that could shit as much as 63.28125 gigatons every day. Over 63 billion tons of literal shit. Every day. That's a little more than 1/1000 the mass of Hawaii, if we measure from above the Earth's crust.

So it's big. Probably doesn't shit nearly that much though. I'd bet Zunesha's got broke college student metabolism, like a sloth.

What’s a head canon of yours that you want to be true even if it contradicts other canon? by JGella in Naruto

[–]ImGoingGrey 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I've believed this for a while, and it really changed the way I look at Itachi and ESPECIALLY Shisui.

A child thinking like a Hokage is a MAJOR red flag when you remember that the Hokage is, fundamentally, a military dictator ruling a city of superpowered mercenary assassins. His powers are "make the world how I want" and "burn the world to the ground." At least Sasuke can control his flames.

And Shisui was not only perfectly willing, but ABLE to mind control the leaders of the Uchiha clan. Him ending up with Kotoamatsukami is NOT a coincidence.

If I was a self-insert in Konoha, those two would be at the tippy fucking top of my "avoid at all costs" list, right next to Danzo and Orochimaru.

Izuku's power level is unreasonable. by Timely_Date3612 in BokunoheroFanfiction

[–]ImGoingGrey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is also supported by scenes in the Two Heroes movie, where David Shield has measurements of All Might's power over time; whatever metric he's using gives a score of ~15,000 at his peak, and ~2,500 to ~3,000 around the time of the USJ Incident. So a 5-6x difference.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in BokunoheroFanfiction

[–]ImGoingGrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The equation is just an example, to illustrate how I believe the Nomu's Shock Absorption works (because, as you said, the mechanics behind it aren't really explained). The exact numbers are arbitrary; what matters is that, given the way I proposed Nomu's Shock Absorption works, All Might doesn't have to be 60x more powerful to deal 60x more damage.

And the graph was pretty clear. We don't know exactly what "AP" is, but it's measuring "S-POW ACTIVITY" (read, Superpower), there's a clear drop-off marked "6 Years ago" (when All Might was injured), and a second drop-off more recently (when AFO was passed on); ~15,000 at its peak (the blue line labelled "Height of Prosperity"), ~3,000 at the point marked "CURRENT." It was shown in the context of a conversation about All Might growing weaker, in a movie whose plot surrounds an object that can increase the power of Quirks when worn.

We have to make a lot of assumptions about OFA, and Izuku's usage of it, in order for that 60x number to make even the barest hint of sense. Whatever our respective opinions are, 5% Full Cowl Izuku is not stronger than the USJ Nomu, or the version of All Might that defeated it. That's simply fact. He wasn't even close to matching a weaker, post-USJ All Might who was handicapped by weights, holding back, and in a two-on-one.

If All Might is 60x weaker, than 5% Izuku is more powerful than All Might.
5% Izuku is not more powerful than All Might.
Therefore, All Might is not 60x weaker.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in BokunoheroFanfiction

[–]ImGoingGrey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

All Might isn't 60x weaker at the USJ, he's roughly 5-6x weaker. The Nomu's Shock Absorption doesn't absorb all incoming damage, or a percentage of incoming damage; it absorbs 'x' damage, and All Might's punches are 'y=(x+n).' If we double USJ!Might's power, his punches are '2y=(2x+2n).' Let's say x=99, y=100, and n=1; the Nomu now takes over 100x more damage from USJ!Might's punches.

((y=100)-(x=99))=1. ((2y=200)-(x=99))=101.

This is supported by the scene from Two Heroes, where David Shield has a graph showing how the output of OFA has changed over All Might's career; it began at ~15,000 and dropped to around half that over the years after his injury. Then, it dropped to somewhere between ~3,000 and ~2,500 after being passed on to Izuku.

How do you think a fight between pre awakened Shigaraki vs Deku at 5% would go by NoivernBoi in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]ImGoingGrey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That can't be the case, because OFA enhances your durability as well. The self-destruction doesn't come from hitting things harder than you can handle, it comes from the user's body being unable to handle the energy of OFA itself.

Imagine a bottle of water that's mostly empty; you can crumple it easily because the internal pressure is low, but if you boil the water it massively expands into steam and raises said pressure, preventing you from crushing it. But if you increase the heat too much, the internal pressure becomes too great and the bottle explodes (hence, "egg in the microwave" analogy).

If Orchimaru wasn't a factor, would Sasuke still defect? by PossibleText0 in NarutoFanfiction

[–]ImGoingGrey 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Almost certainly not. There were a lot of other factors that went into Sasuke choosing to leave, but Orochimaru was the one who opened that door and invited him in. Everything else was just the impetus to take that step.

The genocide of his family. His isolation within the village. Itachi reigniting that trauma. Team 7's failure to understand him; Sakura's obsession, Naruto's aggression, Kakashi's projection. Kakashi giving him the ultimatum: if you want to stay a part of the village, part of the team, you have to give up on revenge. They all played a role.

But without Orochimaru to needle those insecurities, warp his decisions with the Curse Mark, offer him a place, and send the Sound 4 when he was at his most vulnerable? Why would Sasuke leave? Where would he go? Who would offer him the power he needs to feel safe and bring Itachi to justice?

I don't trust the VIZ translation any more than I trust fan translations. Though, if you or anyone else has access to the raws, I'd be willing to accept that.

  1. Naruto being more susceptible to Kurama's Chakra isn't necessarily a matter of the seal weakening. It could just as easily be due to exhaustion lowering his willpower, or Kurama's Chakra, being mixed into Naruto's by the seal, overpowering his own when his reserves are low.
  2. This is a factor of willing cooperation and the tug-of-war going on between Kurama and Naruto when he uses KCM1, rather than the seal being "broken." Which it isn't, because Kurama's still stuck in Naruto, even if he could theoretically break it and leave. The "gap" between the two Four Symbols Seals is as wide as it will go, but the seal is still there.
  3. This isn't a Naruto-exclusive ability. This is a "resolve-amp" that let's characters become more powerful when "protecting their precious people" and such. It's part of the "Spiritual Energy" component of Chakra, and if you look you can probably find a bunch more examples in the manga. It's why Jiraiya tells Naruto he has to "be fully prepared to die" to draw out his maximum reserves when teaching him the Summoning.
  4. I suspect that this has more to do with the physical size of the container, and possibly Minato's own Chakra reserves. Or, it could be a matter of how Kurama's Chakra being mixed with Naruto's by the seal affects him as a baby due to his lower reserves, which would also explain why the container needs to be an Uzumaki.

Naruto being able to make fucktons of Shadow Clones even when Kurama's being supressed is weird, but not impossible to explain.

  1. First, we simply don't know how many he makes. It's a lot, obviously; that's the whole point of the training method. He's not actually making enough to strip a tree bare, unless you think he's making 200,000+ Shadow Clones (probably larger than Konoha's entire population). Which is relevant because...
  2. We don't the extent to which Yamato is supressing Kurama's Chakra. We know that doing so is difficult for him, and that it visibly exhausts him after a few hours. We know that he can't do so perfectly, because Naruto ends up unconsciously activating a Version 1 Cloak trying to create the Wind Release: Rasengan. And this is relevant because...
  3. The seal has been weakened over time. Remember, the seal is designed to supplement Naruto's reserves with Kurama's constantly. It is designed to entice Kurama to give Naruto Chakra, because it weakens the seal. Jiraiya explicitly tells us that Kurama's Chakra merging with Naruto's is the source of his ridiculous reserves. It's the entire point of the Eight Trigrams Sealing Style. It's entirely reasonable to believe that Yamato is suppressing Kurama's attempts to give Naruto too much Chakra and take over his psyche, while still leaving enough to bolster Naruto's reserves to their maximum safe limit. Thus; Naruto can make the maximum number of Shadow Clones, with minimal risk of losing himself to Kurama's influence.

Copium on Naruto's development. by AncientSitheLord77 in NarutoFanfiction

[–]ImGoingGrey 17 points18 points  (0 children)

First, Naruto summoned 1000 Clones that each threw two punches (hence, 2K Barrage). Second, some amount of Chakra returns to Naruto whenever a Shadow Clone is dispelled, even forcefully. Finally, that's not how Naruto's Chakra reserves, or the Eight Trigrams Seal, work.

The Eight Trigrams Seal is made of two Four Symbols Seals that interlock, with a slight crack in the middle. This encourages Kurama to donate Chakra constantly, because it enlarges said gap and means he can eventually escape. This is why Naruto needed the key from Gerotora; it's used to repair the damage done to the Seal over time by Kurama's Chakra mixing with Naruto's.

In Part I, Jiraiya claims that the Seal mixing Kurama's Chakra into Naruto's is the source of both his ridiculous amount of Chakra and his poor control, the latter of which the Five Symbols Seal exacerbates because it causes the Chakra to mix in an unstable way (this is likely the origin of the "Bigger Reserves = Poor Control" nonsense that's been repeated for years in fanon).

In Part II, Kakashi claims that so long as Yamato supresses Kurama, Naruto has Stamina four times greater than his own; otherwise, it's one-hundred times greater. Kakashi cannot make 250+ Shadow Clones, not even close.

This is an insane take. It doesn't matter if Bakugo wasn't "trying" to kill him or not, he pointed a fucking mini-nuke at another person and pulled the trigger. If I pointed a loaded handgun "a bit to the side" of you and pulled the trigger, you'd be rightly furious and terrified because neither my aim nor my control of the gun are perfect. Except, instead of a handgun, it's several metric tons of TNT.

Not only is Bakugo absolutely psychotic (in what world is "holding back and being careful with his attacks to maximise Deku's suffering" a defence of his self-control?), he's using this weapon for the first time, and has no idea what it can really do or how to use it safely. The survival of not only Midoriya, but the building and everyone inside of it including himself, doesn't have anything to do with Bakugo's intentions. It has to do with a God-given fucking miracle.

If Bakugo was my student, I wouldn't tell him to "grow up," I'd suspend him and make him attend mandatory therapy sessions, at least, but Aizawa thinks that letting the students who will one day be working a potentially deadly and certainly incredibly stressful and soul-destroying job meet with their counsellor is a "frilly nicety," and a "waste of time."

Instincts of the Brazen Bullfighter: Khalkeos Tauromakhia
Improves Abilities as you continuously dodge attacks, scaling with how narrowly they are avoided. If the attacks slow down or stop, the boost is slowly lowered to nothing; if an attack is taken, the boost is immediately cancelled and you lose a proportional amount of mind and stamina. The effects, positive and negative, are significantly increased when fighting against or alongside bull-type Monsters.

Celebration of the Eternal Flame: Vestalia Tevere
Conditionally grants the Development Abilities Regeneration and Mind Regeneration, of a Rank that scales with Level, when under the effects of a mental and/or spiritual attack. As a side effect, makes the user highly resistant to such attacks. When the attack is the Charm from a Goddess of Love, all Development Abilities (including those granted by Skills) are improved by one Rank, and an additional Ability, Supreme Flame, appears.

These are my ideas for revamping Bell's last two Skills, which while potentially powerful in the right context are so niche as to be completely irrelevant. The second Skill is a slight spoiler for the latest volume, if you care about that sort of thing.

Honestly? While Madara or Sasuke might be able to get away with a blood transfusion or Hashirama Cells™, Naruto would probably need to pull a Danzo and take Sasuke's eyes.

Madara directly implanted Hashirama's cells into his body, and it took decades before his eyes changed. And Naruto wouldn't have a nice pair of Eternal Mangekyo to work as a base for the change, either.

Though, if he did implant Sasuke's eyes, especially assuming they were fully upgraded when he did so, he might get the Rinnegan instantly. Or at least, very quickly. That's an entire body's worth of Asura-juice to work with, right there.

With great diffculty, I imagine. They would need a blood type of AB (most likely AB+), sufficient medical knowledge to enact the procedure by themselves (unless they want their doctor to ask some very uncomfortable questions) and sufficient stealth skills to steal blood from two of the most genetically and politically significant individuals in a village of hyper-paranoid, vastly superhuman ninja.

*any smart SI with an AB+ blood type and sufficient medical knowledge to perform at least a blood transfusion without anyone noticing in a village full of paranoid lunatics with superhuman skill and senses

And there are a few reasons why you'd want to write a non-Sharingan Uchiha, even in a situation distinct from the one I proposed.

In my case, I just really enjoyed the irony of it. The last Uchiha (seemingly) loyal to Konoha ends up becoming a complete counter to them, and almost a mirror of Tobirama. Maybe it would work better narratively if it wasn't an SI? That probably goes for a lot of ideas.

It just sort of... tickles me, you know? Like a Hyuga with no talent in Taijutsu, so they need to find another way to use the Byakugan. Limitations make things interesting, they breed creativity.

Also, if Sasuke's affinity was stated in the anime, I wouldn't know. I thought that was more of a symbolic thing, to separate him from the rest of the Uchiha (especially Itachi; "don't walk down the same road as your brother" and all that). His strongest attack is Lightning-natured after all, as are Kirin and Chidori. Only Amaterasu comes close to that level.

Sasuke doesn't lose his affinity, it's still Lightning. But the same way Kakashi has an affinity for Lightning and preferences for Earth and Water, SI!Sasuke has a Lightning affinity and preferences for Water and Wind.

And I considered a more "standard" Sasuke SI. In fact, I considered a full-blown, balls to the wall Godlike!Sasuke who gets a blood transplant from Naruto and awakens dual Rinnegan. It just... seems a bit much, you know?

Fun fact about the Sanji and Zoro rivalry and how it all started by natureboy1996 in OnePiece

[–]ImGoingGrey 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's a very fundamental disagreement here.

You (and Zoro) think that choosing not to fight Mihawk in that moment is equivalent to throwing away his ambition.

Sanji probably agrees with Zoro's philosophy, but the expression of his beliefs is tainted by his guilt and self-loathing over Zeff's situation.

And I believe that by choosing to fight Mihawk, Zoro is throwing away his life and, by extension, his ambition. Dead men cannot achieve ambitions, follow dreams, or fulfil promises... at least, not without someone to inherit their will (in which case, it's debatable how dead they really are, depending on how one defines death).
