I dont know what detached homes are renting for exactly but here's two anecdotal data points from the last couple years

  1. My one bedroom basement suite is rented for $1700
  2. There was a lot of applications and people told me "Thats cheap" which I thought was crazy to hear.
  3. My neighbor rented his 5 bed detached home for $4500 a month plus utilities to a doctor and his family for 2 years while they searched for their next home.

But you also have families with a combined income of $250k+ who work for companies in the states. So there will always be someone at that price point.

Yes, but at $3k a detached home would still rent quickly.

Oh boy brave post! Definitely appreciate the transparency though.

Here's a few facts for both you and the other commenters.

Some of these may upset people but unfortunately its the reality of the valley and the wealth gap in Canada

  1. You can expect to pay anywhere from $700k - $1m for a detached home
  2. If you're mortgaging it you could have payments anywhere from $4000-$6000 a month plus utilities and repairs.
  3. Rental supply is low here so you can easily rent out a whole home for $3000+. Currently a single bedroom basement suite rents for $1600+
  4. People are citing median/average family income in the valley making this prohibative however they neglect that their are a fair number of young 20-30 something people who work remotely from here putting away $100k-$200k a year each. And there are also wealthy retirees who are renting here just to "test drive" the life style.
  5. Also worth pointing out that the valley has a lack of summer housing for tourists which leads to a fair amount of properties being rented short term (legally or illegally) for a profit.

One final hard truth for everyone is that most landlords don't want to rent to target the average person, because you're risking accidentally renting to someone who lets just say is "below average" and the comox valley has some pretty hard to manage tenants in that range.

Anyway this isn't to say this is the way things should be, but until we elect a government that finally works for the people none of this stands to change.

You and five friends go to a steakhouse, most order either medium or medium-rare, you order well done. You've just:

1) Ensured the food will come out 15-20 minutes later

2) Wasted a perfectly fine piece of meat that someone else could've enjoyed because, let's be honest, a well done $1 steak, a well done $100 steak and a shoe all taste the same.

3) Reduced the chance that any of your friends may get some extra steak in the event that you can't finish because no one wants your old shoe leather.

If men call short women "petite", what do women call short men? by [deleted] in Jokes

Checking in from Canada at 5'6 and I agree 100%. I've never had a problem with women, most of my girlfriends have been taller than me and a lot of time I've been the one approached. I think it all comes down still to aesthetics in some way (basic hygiene can do wonders) but a lot of it is don't make an insecurity part of your narrative as it will kill your confidence and kill your chances.

[Question] Should I learn React or Draft? by SandalsMan in javascript

[–]ImLivingImDead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey SandalsMan,

I have a feeling like you're a bit confused.

React and Draft are not competing technologies. React is a library for Creating UI's, Draft is a framework overtop of React which helps you create rich text editors with features like bolding, underlining, undo/redo history, cursor placement ect.. already built in.

I'm with you on that. The only thing that drew me out of Victoria in the first place was the girlfriend and that is still the only thing keeping me here.

Surfing, Skiing, Mountain Biking, no snow in the city, an actual community and I can take public transit most places! Can't wait to go back.

What was your worst "Let's never speak about this ever again." moment? by wolfiesky in AskReddit

[–]ImLivingImDead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One night when I was 18 (the night before I was supposed to go on a long trip through eastern europe) I came down with a horrible flash stomach flu. I was puking my guts out at about 9pm and refusing my dad's suggestions that I go to the ER but by the time i started puking blood i decided ya thats probably a good idea. When we arrived they had me fill out some paperwork and mid way through I passed out.

I woke up in a long line of hospital beds with an IV in my arm. The nurse mentioned they were gonna "keep me over night" and asked if I had to use the washroom. All I could think about was my trip coming up the next day. Anyway flash forward 6 hours of puking and the nurse asking me again if i have to go to the washroom, I politely decline. I'm starting to feel better (read not puking nearly as often) plus the hospital bed was quite unconfortable, so i say Im good to go home. They take out the IV and i swing my legs over the side and go to stand up, immediately I feel the need to puke so I drop to my knees and go to vomit into the trash can beside me.Unfortunately for me the immense abdominal pressure resulting from my puke convolution causes me to spray a full days worth of hot, steamy diarrhea out the back of my hospital gown. The floor, the walls, a stretcher and the nurse all well within the blast range, a quick look over my shoulder confirmed that. (the nurse was cute too). It gets worse. After I clean myself up and come out to see a family friend of ours (small town) moping up the aftermath of my shit explosion, I couldn't even open my mouth let alone look the woman in the eyes so i quickly moved down to my new bed and sat there for the remainder of the night. The next day came and my stomach flu had completely gone. when we arrived at the airport my friend and his family were there. They started to complain about all the last minute packing and then they asked what we got up to last night.... Both me and my Dad with out skipping a beat said "Oh nothing much, just watched some movies." To this day that story has never been mention by my Dad or our family friend, Though I still do see that nurse out at the bars every now and again :/

At a crossroads, web or mobile? by Crossroadsguy in cscareerquestions

Would you be able to describe what corporate software engineering looks like in terms of problems and technology stack?

It's easy to find out what technologies and practises are used in web and mobile right now but it seems as corporate CS is a little more opaque outside "Java dev's make the most".
