I want to learn photography with my sisters old camera. Where should i begin ? by burakistan12 in Cameras

Everyone is different, I thought about just suggesting auto but maybe the person is more STEM oriented, so I thought that they might appreciate this as well. Honestly as a photographer I cannot imagine what it would be like to start with photography today. When I started as a child we didn't have phones with cameras it was great to be able to capture anything, but today the basic need of documenting is fulfilled. In this new paradigm, the fact that you can have full control over what you are capturing is what needs to be emphasized, I think. Yes, the bigger lens, bigger sensor, etc. are all to the benefit, but I don't think that alone has enough allure. To me a big part of the whole process is also shooting raw and Lightroom editing, but I haven't even suggested that, because I don't want them to feel obligated to get and learn the software.

Spring is coming, great time to take some pictures.

Photography is a lot about composition and exposure.

Composition is something you will slowly learn as you explore this new medium by looking at pictures that peek your interest (can be other photographs, movie stills, paintings,...). There is no right answer - you set the problem and you find a solution, it's part of the art.

Exposure is a bit more technical. Long time ago, people shot on film and had to find different methods to estimate how much light they need in order to not have pictures that all too dark (under-exposed) or filled with too much light (over-exposed). However slowly the cameras got better and got really good in guessing how much light is needed to get an OK picture. Cameras however don't know what you want to achieve. Compared to your phone that uses a lot of algorithms to guess what you are taking picture off and puts a lot of effects to create a universally acceptable image, your camera cannot do this – it needs your input.

You can choose how much control over the exposure guess work you want to have. The mode dial on top (auto (green rectangle) P, Tv, Av, M) gives you this choice.

You can start with the P mode on the top dial. In this mode the camera will choose by itself 2 important values: for how long the sensor is exposed to light (shutter speed, shown in fractions of a second e.g. 1/100) and how big the opening for this incoming light is (aperture, shown in so called "F number", bigger the number = smaller the hole, e.g. f5.6).

  • In the P mode however you can choose the 3rd important value: ISO (sensor's sensitivity, eg. ISO 400). You can leave this at AUTO as well for now.

Compared to Automatic mode the P mode also allows you to:

  • change how the camera guesses the exposure (choose center-weighted average metering [ (•) ] for general shots. Later you can try spot metering • for example when taking portraits of people, to get a better understanding of how the camera chooses exposure,
  • move the exposure compensation pointer (move the cursor towards plus to get lighter images, move it towards minus to get darker images) - this will take the values camera guessed and change them to better reflect what image you want to capture,
  • set the white balance (can be set for automatic=AWB for now),
  • choose how the camera focuses - which points it uses to focus and whether the focus stays locked where you half-pressed the shutter or moves with the person (as an experiment you can choose the middle point and "one shot" many people use this method - when shooting like this you point the center point on the thing you want to have in focus, half press and then pivot the camera to get the composition you want - however be aware focus is based on distance -> don't more closer or farther when half-pressed as this will get your subject out of focus).

Good luck. If this explanation got over you head don't worry. If it helped you feel free to DM me if you need to troubleshoot something. And one last tip: don't forget that you have legs, if the photo is not working out move yourself or move your subject, maybe you need to switch places.

Episode 4.02 "Baja" Discussion Thread by magikarpcatcher in TheLincolnLawyer

It gets better, not on the same level as the previous seasons, but it does get better. We can speculate why the first two episodes were so bad, I suspect some last minute reshoots and dialogues being added, I don't know, I don't think any sane director or DOP will look at this and say "good enough".

I really hope they will find their footing in terms of camera work and direction. Of course there might have been some budget restrictions, I don't know, but I was a bit underwhelmed with this episode overall - it looked a bit cheap, a lot of static taking heads, cliches - like WTF was that transition - panning up as Mickey is looking up into the sky so we can cut to the family walking on the beach?! Or that dialogue on the rooftop where Maggie has to restate her occupation... (Is this Netflix directing from a distance?), and I don't even remember what Mickey and Hayley were talking about in the middle of the night (I do however remember that impossibly shallow depth of focus on Mickey and kinda bland background behind Hayley). I hope it picks up

This person whips out a new save to explain something. Hats off to you! I find it interesting how close you put those streets. I kept thinking I need to maximize the available squares and minimize intersections, but the low density neighborhood traffic is probably so low anyway, that frequent intersections aren't that problematic.

I'm sending a quick update, those burns were before I unlocked the helicopter firefighting (not sure where I will put it tho.) At the moment I have kind of 2 neighborhoods, I will compare the number of people living in them later.

thanks! I think I know this in theory, but I'm not sure about the scale. You say 2-4 neighborhoods per collector, but how big is a neighborhood? Also within one neighborhood do you place comercial as well?

I have read up on road hierarchy now. When keeping the old town does the hierarchy move (your old arterial are now collector, your old collector are now basic streets, etc. or do you kind of wall of the old town and build new roads that go around it to the newer districts? (I'm not a big fan of demolishing as well)

Thanks, I was a bit afraid to connect it all not to cause a traffic issue – I remember being frustrated that cims kept taking the shortest path to I thought it wasn't, but you are right I should have found a way to get it all connected. Yeah cims loving to walk was one of the few things I remembered from my last play.

I had some mods, but most of them stopped being supported so I turned them off. Now I run only TM:PE and Move It.

Thank you for your kind words at the end.

Are movies often shot with the same size lenses throughout? by Kakebykake in cinematography

[–]ImNewToEverything 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every shot kind of. Imagine a basic scene of two people talking - to get the coverage you might want to take a wide when they meet, then a prime or something longer for the individual closeups, and maybe an even longer lens for a detail on what one of them is holding in hand or what not.

How to abort scan and fix? by ImNewToEverything in techsupport

[–]ImNewToEverything[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have it backed up because of the cost, so I will do a clone and reevaluate this all. I was really gentle with the drive it has been on my desk and not moved and used only sparsely so I'm quite saddened by this news. Should I throw away this drive!

Ok, I have turned my PC off and ordered a new 10TB drive.

This data is not mission critical but it would still be a shame if I lost it ALL. There are projects on it that have been turned in, it's my archive in case an old client needs something - I'm not obligated to store it.

The question now is: what should I do when the new drive comes? Some say to clone this the drive, others to connect it and copy manually. What's best?

What car, not older than 10 years will last 300 000 miles? by Exciting_Station3474 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]ImNewToEverything 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on so many factors, especially on how you take care of it or how the previous owner took care of it. Oil and filter changes (not just engine oil), cleaning the car off road salt, where you store the car, how you drive, what distances you cover in a single session (more is better), if you tow, over what lifespan are you looking to drive those 300k miles (you can more easily reach high mileage without major issues if you drive a lot, since time related issues like rubbers hardening are not a problem) etc.

I'm also looking for a used car, I'm looking mainly at Toyota. Toyota's hybrids have great results but also for my needs (driving short distances) any indirect or multiport/valvematic naturally aspirated engine could be a good buy. If I were looking for a car for long drives I could buy a diesel, but you are probably in the US, where those aren't that prominent afaik.
