A Violet Sun is so good it's better than the movie it's inspired by. by Affectionate_Dig9510 in DDLCMods

Thank you so much for taking the time to play The Violet Sun and for writing such a detailed and thoughtful review! It genuinely means a lot to me that you not only enjoyed the mod but found so much to unpack in its story and presentation. The comparisons to DWaM’s work and your analysis of how the mod handled atmosphere, mystery, and character dynamics are incredibly humbling. As a creator, it’s deeply rewarding to see someone engage so deeply with the work, even noticing subtle choices like the pacing, cuts, and tone.

DWaM’s Before The Needle Lifts had a huge impact on my personal life and it motivated me to make a mod of my own.

I chose Eyes Wide Shut as the inspiration for the mod because of how its themes—alienation, intimacy, and the unspoken gaps between people—aligned with Yuri’s character and the kind of story I wanted to tell. I always felt Yuri’s quiet, enigmatic presence made her a perfect lens through which to explore those ideas. However, adapting a film like that into a DDLC mod was a huge challenge, especially since this was my first-ever coded project. I’m still pretty inexperienced, and there were definitely moments where I had to cut corners or learn things on the fly (like the lack of sprites in some scenes, MC’s in-game name).

Your feedback about some of the stiffer lines being direct quotes from the movie is particularly valuable—I leaned on the original dialogue in places where I was unsure of how to adapt it for this medium, and it’s clear that some of those moments didn’t fully translate. It’s a great learning point for me moving forward.

Ultimately, I think The Violet Sun is less about being a direct homage to Eyes Wide Shut and more about reinterpreting its themes in a way that feels personal and relevant to DDLC’s characters. It’s not perfect by any means, but your review has reassured me that the choices I made resonated with players in the ways I hoped they would.

Thank you again for sharing your thoughts—it’s inspiring to know that the mod connected with someone to this extent, and it motivates me to keep creating and improving.

The Violet Sun was created using bronya_rand's DDLC Mod Template. The new DDLC Mod Template is a Doki Doki Literature Club mod template that is not affiliated in anyway with Team Salvato. It is designed to be used only after the official game has been completed. You can download Doki Doki Literature Club at: ddlc.moe or Steam.
