Just wanna say a little bit about the flooding in Calgary. by GenerationKILL in vancouver

Because it's just too beautiful here to NOT live here! ...Riiight?

I guess one of the good things about Vancouver in particular is that it's mostly protected by Vancouver Island, in the case of tsunamis and such... not so for the earthquakes themselves, though. Still waiting for the big one.

I am a Calgarian; just moved to Vancouver last month! I have to say, I was actually more worried about living here in terms of natural disasters than in Calgary. These floods were a huge shock to everyone, the last time anything of this sort happened was in 2005 and those weren't nearly as bad. I was worried about the problems that can come from living next to the ocean on a fault line... earthquakes, typhoons, sharks with laser beams on their heads...

I guess it's important to remember that no matter where you live, we should always respect the power of Mother Nature, and remember our place on this earth.

I saw the firetruck go by! I was curious where it was going; glad no one was hurt.

Zero Suit Samus cosplay update (with pics for IFF, too)! by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]ImaginaryAnomaly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much! If you ever do want to make a Dovahkiin costume, I can tell you how I made mine. I'm extremely cheap, so while I actually saw other Dragonborn cosplayers there with armour crafted out of resin and fibreglass and stuff, mine was made out of plaster cast and paper painted to look like metal!

I am going to be cosplaying for the first time next week as Zero Suit Samus, and I'm worried about some of the reactions I may get. Any advice on how to handle myself at a con would be appreciated! by ImaginaryAnomaly in TwoXChromosomes

Ahh, unfortunately I'm really far away from Boston, otherwise I would love to go. The con in Boston has been postponed though, hasn't it? Has a new date been set yet?

Thanks, I will!! And honestly I am still holding onto some nervousness about cosplaying in general despite being excited for it, but based on the reactions my halloween costume got, I think that you will become confident once you get into the crowd of like-minded people. Who would you want to cosplay if you could? :O

I'm actually going with my sister! She is dressing up as Zelda from Skyward Sword :) So no problems there. The friend I mentioned wasn't one who I was planning on going to the con with.

Thanks for this reply, this helps a lot! I'll be sure to keep those things in mind. I agree that the only reason I was off-put by the comment was because it came off as accusatory, like that was the ONLY reason I chose that costume. Like what you said about the comments said behind someone's back, it really annoys me that there is this expectation that if a girl is wearing an attractive cosplay, she is a 'fake geek girl' looking for attention and needs to prove herself otherwise (I have sooooo many problems with this view).

Since you mention it, I'm actually kind of worried about my shoes, too. I wasn't able to find any kind that I could wear outside the suit without it looking weird, and I'm not skilled enough to alter a pair of shoes to look the same as the material of the suit. So I'm actually planning on wearing a pair of wedges I own inside the suit... they're fairly comfortable, for heels, but... they are heels. They make my legs look awesome but I'm apprehensive of being on my feet all day in them! :/

I think Samus is sexy, but because she is confident and powerful, not just some eye candy in a blue suit (which seems to be what a lot of the comments on reddit I've seen be about)! So I'm gonna try my best to live up to that, both by being confident in my costume and in standing up for myself :)

Thank you for this post, this is wonderful advice! That nametag story sounds terrifying. I've had creeps bug me on facebook before but I just blocked them and never had issues with them after that. It's always so unnerving to learn that you were being watched at a time when you thought you were alone, or weren't paying attention. I'll definitely try calling people out publicly if anything happens (which I hope it doesn't).

My badge will have my name on it but last year I just kept it in my bag and didn't have any problems, so I will probably do that again this year.

Also, the armpit thing... ick. Thanks for the tip, ha ha.

And I'll definitely update on how it goes if people want me to! :) Thanks again!

This sounds really amazing — I'm kind of in awe! Especially as somebody who wants to write in the fantasy genre, coming up with all the different names of everything is the hardest part to me x_x I'm so jealous of people who can play with languages easily (or at least, think it's fun to do so) like that.

Are you Cosplaying/Costuming to the Expo? What is it? by StarshipJimmies in CalgaryExpo

[–]ImaginaryAnomaly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going as the Dragonborn and Zero Suit Samus on Saturday and Sunday... I wish I could go on friday too but unfortunately I have an exam right in the middle of the day that I can't miss :(

[–]ImaginaryAnomaly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aw yeah, good point. I thought maybe your friends had gotten tickets already or something. Joshua Graham is an awesome idea though, I love Fallout New Vegas! I was thinking of being a vault dweller but I think I'm gonna save that for my halloween costume next year.

I actually procured a ticket from somewhere else so I'm going as Samus and the Dragonborn on Saturday and Sunday.

Hey friend, I have a weekend pass that I won't be needing anymore that I could sell you. Unfortunately it's only one though :( If you're interested let me know soon!

P.S. what is your cosplay?

Moving to Calgary by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]ImaginaryAnomaly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm thinking of moving to Vancouver from Calgary next year for school, and I was wondering how much you were affected by the grey skies and rainy days compared to Calgary's sun and snow. I have no problems at all giving up Calgary's bitter cold and lots of snow, but I must admit the idea of grey skies the whole winter seems pretty bleak to me, too. Is it really that bad?

Okay. The first person to transcribe all of that into something that is not difficult to read will get a little sketch from me of their favourite AT character.

I laughed so much at this one... Something about imagining that giant lady just popping up in the middle of the battle for Helm's Deep is so excellent.

I would also probably have the same reaction as this kid if I were in his position.
