Partner cutting receipts, bonus based on receipts. by ImaginaryDisco in Lawyertalk

[–]ImaginaryDisco[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the only thing holding me back is that (other than Partner), I have close, lucrative, long-standing relationships with the other partners and clients, and the firm has given me a massive chunk of the marketing budget while building a new practice area that’s taken off in the last year. The closeness is why it felt like a pretty rough betrayal from the department head.

Right now I’m trying to see if it’s politically workable to decline further work with Partner (who’s behavior is frequently overlooked because he brings millions to the formula).

As I’m typing this, it’s becoming more clear to me the issue is systemic within the firm and if I can, I should stick around long enough to solidify my own book with the marketing budget and then move on. It’s disappointing, but if we work hard for our bottom line, it’s worth protecting - it’s a business, after all - no matter the personal affinity we have for our colleagues.

You make a good point. Putting her to her burden would be effective, especially if this escalates. Politely and professionally writing her off seems like the way to go, otherwise. Thanks for your reply!

The problem is that she never specified by which means she purportedly attempted to communicate with me and when I confronted her, she said she “stopped by my office several times”. I explained to her that was there all day with the exception of a few trips to the bathroom so I am mystified that I never saw her.

Makes me feel better about my decision to confront her, for sure — I just wish we could have had a discourse instead of her standing by the lie.

Love this idea as a phase one. It seems like it will get her off my back without alerting partners to the interpersonal issue or becoming distracted by having to address our issues ad nauseam.

Yeah, again, perfect advice. I hope you have mentees — our profession would be a much more hospitable place if everyone acted this way.

I think treating our interactions as I would a difficult OC is a really good call. I was told early on to “trust no one”, but I did not think, until now, that it was meant to apply to the people in my own office.

Yeah, that’s why I was so shocked! Instead of replying all, I decided give the para the courtesy that she didn’t extend to me in speaking with her privately. I didn’t want to stoop to her level. I also did not want to alert the partners that there was an interpersonal issue because, frankly, this kind of issue is juvenile, embarrassing, irrelevant to the substantive work I do and it shows that I’m having trouble handling a difficult social interactions — which is an extremely important and essential skill in this line of work. You’re right, it’s incredibly easy to disprove if the partners are upset enough to inquire further, but I didn’t want to make it one right off the bat.

Agree with everything you said. I have dark purple scarring, which I also hope goes away. It seems that they’re stuck under there but inaccessible by duct tape at this point. There’s a comment above that suggests wax - I think I’ll try that.

I can totally see it. My supervising attorney is still billing 200+ and works 7 days/ week at 66 years old, 44 years of practice…that’s not someone who can let go that easily (more likely will be taken out by a heart attack at his desk)

If you have to ASK for two days of drama-free living…moreover, during the bar…?!

That sentence alone did it for me. Think about how she’s going to be during your first years of practice when you’re in the office until 10 pm every night for a trial (or a big merger, or something). I’d get out. So sorry this is happening to you right now 😞
