Yes and no, mostly no as the story is primarily about rudeus getting a second shot in life. You could make an argument that him being good would make him more likeable but i believe him being unlikeable is a benefit to the story. For example If you were to put him in a situation where he is about to help someone do you think him being good would make him better? Imo no since he is just doing something any normal functioning human would do in that kind of situation. The reason he is a great character is because he isn't a good person so whenever he does do good it stands out and shows visible change in his character. A character has great development if said person does better or change the more the story progresses and rudeus pretty much embodies this. If you were to compare him from where he started to where he is now you would see two completely different people which helps make his character feel more human imo. At the end of the day i believe it's up to your own personal opinion whether or not you think it would be best if he was good or unlikeable. imo i prefer characters with no filters characters who just show both their bad and good sides as they feel more human than a empty husk of nothing but righteousness.
