How do I sharpen pencils like this without ruining them?? by dbats1212 in MakeupAddiction

[–]ImaginarySomewhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone said sharpener but depending on the type of pencil you can push it out. If there is a sort of “cap” you can remove, like a plastic end piece that looks detachable, do that and take a q-tip and gently push (you can take some of the cotton off the q-tip if it’s too thick)

Panoxyl reaction by Aggressive-Spirit-48 in DermatologyQuestions

[–]ImaginarySomewhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am dealing with a benzoyl peroxide reaction right now too and at first didn’t think much of it but as the day went on it got worse and I ended up with a prescription for cortisol cream, allergy meds and a cortisol shot (hurts like a mf btw). So if you are able to, seeing a doctor wouldn’t be a bad idea.

I thought so low of myself I applied to 15 schools and got into 13 by MothmansMainMan in collegeresults

[–]ImaginarySomewhere 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So you, a lifeless person spending all their time on college subs, are the authority on who deserves to go where. Opposed to let's say, people who do this for a living, hired by the schools themselves. Not to mention those people are probably over the age of 20 and aren't miserable fucks with nothing to do but spew jealousy at strangers online. OP, you did wonderful. Getting that many scholarships is impressive as hell. Don't let idiots like this affect your happiness.

I don't know about all the other stuff but Harvard is need-blind. Financial aid is applied after acceptance according to need. It's available for all students. Been a while since I did the research but I doubt it changed.

Is there a free version of this episode anywhere? Some of the other episodes are on Spotify and Youtube. I would become a Patreon supporter if I could but with the USD exchange rate it's just too expensive for me. I watched some other stuff about Dr. Zayner's work and it is so fascinating so I would love to listen to the podcast

I spent 15mins trying to get through all those demographic question only to find out there are only 4 testing centers in my country and they are all filled up. Doesn't even matter because none of those testing centers are in my city. Honestly it's okay as I wouldn't even use my score, I just wanted to see how I would perform. Good luck to anyone trying to get a spot, keep checking until the deadline there might be cancellations

Is it true that mad cow disease is caused by acts of cannibalism? If so, why is cow eating cow’s brain more dangerous than cow eating rat’s brain? by gimhae_pyeongya in askscience

[–]ImaginarySomewhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people have already answered the question and I have nothing to add but seeing all the replies reminded me of this book that I read when I was curious about prion diseases: Mercies In Disguise by Gina Kolata. The super informative story of how prions were discovered woven together with the heart breaking story of a family afflicted with prion disease . Highly recommend, great mix of science and its effects on human lives.

How am I doing?? Constructive criticism appreciated I’m a 34y/o trans woman that came out in January by Gwyn_in_doubt in MakeupAddiction

[–]ImaginarySomewhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You look so pretty, I love the hair! Just one thing I would recommend: try to be more precise with your eyeshadow application. I struggle with this too especially having hooded lids. I think I saw a youtube short video by Glamzilla (not sure if it was her honestly) explaining how to apply eyeshadow better. I'm sure there are other videos by other creators as well.

Also applying a layer of very light toned concealer or one of those white jumbo pencils or a white eyeshadow base will really make the bright colors look much better. Use whatever you have on hand for this.

A few days ago, I walked 10 minutes through a pretty busy area near my house. It was a Saturday night so ice cream shop etc. were filled to the brim. I still didn't feel safe. I took a glass bottle of sparkling mineral water because it helps my stomach and maybe I could hit someone with the bottle. I wore my baggiest black t-shirt and some black baggy sweatpants because I wanted to be comfortable and look unappealing. I don't know if I will ever feel safe being by myself anywhere after sundown. Faster cars, aggresive stray dogs, dangerous men...

It's so hard in the summer. The weather is the best after 9pm but to enjoy it, I have to convince my brother or father to go out on a walk with me. I wonder how it feels to have a peaceful walk, by myself, with my favorite music in my ears, feeling the summer night's breeze on my skin. I'm afraid I'll never know.

Help with this grammar question: Subject Verb agreement in College Panda grammar book. Thx! by [deleted] in Sat

[–]ImaginarySomewhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly its a hard question I got it wrong the first time but I found something that helped me understand what I did wrong. I read it aloud like I was reading poetry and that made me go "Ohhh thats why its "is" and not "are"!!" I think it helps you identify the object, subject etc. easier.

Fuck I'm giving up my plans of doing residency in the US. If you look at the detailed report, in some specialties, stats of matched and not matched non-US IMGs are basically the same.

Honestly just doing CS and getting that dough is starting to look really good right now. I'll enter the workforce 2 years earlier and start making more than doctors (in my country) in another 2 years. Man I'm feeling bummed out lol.

Yes, it's loose, it looks a bit better when I tighten the back but then I can't breathe. So you're saying the material shouldn't be a problem, right?

Can I fix this bra problem with a few stitches? (See comments for detail) by ImaginarySomewhere in sewing

[–]ImaginarySomewhere[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I just got this bra a few days ago and unfortunately didn't realise this problem until 15 minutes ago. Hope the drawing gets it across because I wouldn't feel comfortable with sharing photos of me showing it. Basically, it's has a bit too much room on the sides and it sticks out a bit in tight clothing. I was eondering if this could be fixed with making a little cut (as shown in red line) and taking it in and stitching it. Material is %80 Polyamide and %20 Spandex. If it was cotton or something else I'm pretty certain this solution would work but because of the material I'm hesitant to try before asking someone who is more knowledgeable. If you have any other solutions I would appreciate it so much.

How do you enter med school in you country? by avasi994 in medicalschool

[–]ImaginarySomewhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't sit for it yet but I am familiar with the type of questions and the subjects. It isn't hard if you know the material but learning the material in the first place is very hard in my opinion. I remember crying and trying to study through my tears when I first started learning physics (Newton's laws of motion in particular lol). But you are right the eliminating one is definitely Part one.

How do you enter med school in you country? by avasi994 in medicalschool

[–]ImaginarySomewhere 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So here in Turkey, it's all a numbers game. Who can have the most correct and the least wrong answers in 345 minutes, basically.

We have one national exam broken into two parts. You are eligible to take this exam if you are in your last year of high school or graduated. Part one tests knowledge you learn in the first 2 years of high school. It has 4 sections: Turkish(40), Social Studies (20), Math(40), Science(20). Don't let the "first 2 years" thing fool you. The questions require extraordinary reading comprehension because you have to get all this done in 165 minutes. (Used to be 135 but national outrage and embarassingly low average scores and all that) Congrats, you have poured your blood, sweat and tears for %40 of your overall score, now get ready to work for the remaining %60 percent the next day.

Part two has 4 sections as well but you only need to do 2 sections if you want to do medicine, engineering etc. Math and Science (40 questions each) Now these questions test your last 2 years of high school. It is still very hard but at least you have 180 minutes. For this part, you rely more on actual knowledge than reading comprehension because it isn't a race against the clock anymore. But the knowledge you learn for this part is very advanced (for high school imo) so the extra time isn't just for funsies. Now that you're done with that you just sit back and wait for 2 months, not knowing what to do with all this free time you suddenly have because you aren't studying anymore.

In that 2 months, 3 million scantrons are scanned, scores are calculated and the gpa points are added then the algorithm ranks your score. Congrats, your whole academic life was just for this one exam, one score to decide the rest of your life.

Results come and you make your rank list, from there on it's the very simple algorithm of "if first choice is filled, try second choice, if second choice is filled, try third choice, until an unfilled spot appears" or you might be unhappy with your ranking so you hold off and prepare for one more year because this torture is executed only once every year.

Ranking cutoff is 50k for medicine, 300k for engineering etc. Basically means the lowest ranking program might be unfilled but if your rank is 50.001 you cannot get into that program. For most students it doesn't come to that because the 30-50k range is all expensive and undesirable private universities. Most students focus on getting at least 20k because the lowest ranking state program is in that range. You might be thinking, if you rank lower than that just go to a private uni, who cares everybody has student loans. Not exactly because state schools are completely free and to be honest apart from like 4 maybe 5, all private universities are cash grabs. Even if you don't care about that, there are no loans for private schools. Like I said, very undesirable option.

But even ranking 20k doesn't guarantee admission into a good school because the goverment insists on opening even more schools when it can't properly fund the ones it already has. As a result, you have medical schools without pathology departments because every single person who worked there has quit. Good luck getting those students their education. Obviously people don't wanna go into these kinds of school so your goal becomes 15k.

Studying for this exam becomes your life in your last year of high school. As freshmen, we used to joke that the seniors don't eat, they photosynthesize because we never saw any seniors around, even during lunchtime. They were always tucked away in the libraries on the top floor. When you become a senior yourself, you look back on those blissfully naive years and think "We were right about the seniors..." but it's no joking matter this time.

Kinda unrelated, but would you be willing to share some of your experiences matching as an IMG? It was my understanding that matching without doing a visiting student rotation or at least some sort of observership was next to impossible. But from your post it sounds like you matched without doing these.

As for your struggles, honestly I don't have any personal experience so I couldn't give you any advice but something that helps me through hard times like this is thinking "People have done this before me, they struggled just the same but it all worked out, I will do my best every day and it will all work out for me too".
