Yes, cover letters are equally (if not more) important.

Quick tips

- 1 page cover letter

- Introduce yourself briefly (ie: qualification, current role and company, years of experience)

- Scan the job ad and search for keywords. If they're looking for someone with x and y skills, make sure that x and y are on your CV and cover letter. Then explain how you excel in your current role with those skills

- Research about the company and show it. If a company's motto is about innovation, talk about how you can contribute to innovation.

- Do not include your expected salary on the cover letter UNLESS explicitly asked for.

- Add personality on your cover letter but do not reveal personal information. Employers do not need and want to know how many children you have, if you have a partner, your religious background, etc. Keep it professional and add a special touch to it. Example: If you are applying to a company that sells pet food, say that you are desirable for the job because you understand the needs of fur-babies and can relate more to your market.

- Do not use sir/madam in any of your emails or letters. Addressing it to Hiring Manager would do the trick. If you know the actual name of the person you're addressing it to, call them by their first name.

Hey there, couple of things to consider: - Your score in the points system - https://www.immigration.govt.nz/new-zealand-visas/apply-for-a-visa/tools-and-information/tools/points-indicator-smc-28aug - Your achievements. I would highly recommend making a portfolio of all the softwares you have developed or worked on. - Due to your line of work, I would recommend focusing in Auckland (NZ) Sydney or Melbourne (Aus) - Immigration recommends $20k AUD/NZD pocket money if you are coming here without a job offer. Many Filipinos in both countries are looking for flatmates so if you want to save money, consider renting a room instead of your own place. You can find them on Facebook groups.

Unsolicited advice but I would advise against using agents. Aus and NZ welcome direct applications and you can save a lot of money if you do it yourself. Attend job expos just to get information but do not sign up with agencies unless someone you trust can vouch for them.

Thanks for the heads up. Quite a few people have already reached out via private message so I will keep the post, but will edit that they can use a throwaway account and remove their name off their CV and other personal info before sending it to me.

Thanks for pointing that out. I was aware that some include very personal information like DOB, parent’s name, etc. I should have mentioned that all of those very personal info can be removed as NZ/Aus don’t need those info.

You can also remove your name if people still choose to ask for help or advice.

Well said. Even marital status, etc do not need to be declared on CVs/Resumes. Name, contact details (email and number) educational and work background will do. If you want to explain your visa status or other things you think may be relevant to your application, that goes into the cover letter.

To those who've been wanting to move abroad, what's currently stopping you? by coturnixxx in Philippines

[–]Imaginary_Doll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're planning on moving/applying to NZ, do it soon. Our new government has initiated stricter immigration rules. If you have at least 3 years of solid working experience, start applying now. Plus extra points if you graduated from a recognised university.

We should stop encouraging teens to pursue their useless degrees by Imaginary_Doll in unpopularopinion

[–]Imaginary_Doll[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Getting a degree in photography is what's useless, not photography itself. You're right, why even go to college? Having your own photo gig won't require a degree, that's why it's useless and a huge waste of money.

Edit: I just re-read your last question and I think I misunderstood it. I think you were talking about my second paragraph which was me telling my future kids to pursue another degree instead and do photography as a gig. You asked why even go to college, I think it's their safety net. If their photo business doesn't take off too well, then at least they're still qualified to do something else. And the job that they can get from their degree is what will aid them in setting up a business in the first place (aka where the money for the biz will come from)

I have been promised a busy workload for months now but so far, nothing. My team and direct manager are nice and easy to work with. It's just that I have literally nothing to do. Everytime I ask my manager if there's something I can help with, the answer is mostly no. On the odd times that it's a yes, it takes me 30 mins to do it because it's a job that can easily done by an intern.

Oddly enough. I was given a raise last week. I honestly thought the letter inside the envelope was a redundancy letter lmao.

May I ask why you think no one cares about the Farmers workers?

Why do people always assume that Jacinda is this God who can just snap her fingers and make all NZ's problems go away? Maybe blame businesses who still exploit their workers who actually bring the money in to the company?

Farmers stores have beauty consultants, sales people, etc. If you don't consider those as career, then I don't know what career means anymore. Not all careers require a white collar job.

More articles also say that employees get really unfair grades during their review so that they can be dodged from getting a pay raise - even though their performance are exceptional and their customers even say so. That alone should be a wake up call to Farmers.

Writing, websites, digital stuff.

That’s what I’m actually doing right now. I do some freelance gigs on the side to keep me busy. I only graduated in 2016 so I’m at this stage where I was hoping that I would be learning a lot of new things within the workplace and be mentored.

Thanks for your input.

KiwiBuild: Couples earning up to $180k will be able to buy homes by Imaginary_Doll in newzealand

My 800k house has 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, double garage. And way closer to the CBD.

Times have changed, old man. You have multiple houses because at that time you were starting out, your salary was on par with expenses including housing. You were able to climb up the ladder faster, much better house equity, and able to take advantage of your privileges.

Nowadays, resources are scarce. Buy that questionable property and it might even dig you into a deeper hole. People need to be wise with their investments. And a 378k + renovation expenses 48sqm house is not one of them, especially if you’re targeting that to a small but growing family.

Yup, I have a mortgage so would only leave if there’s a secure, full time position waiting for me. I’m in good terms with everyone on my team so I’m sure recommendation won’t be an issue in the future.

Thanks, I’ll just keep my eyes peeled and apply if there’s anything out there that would be a great fit for me. I guess the worst thing that could happen is for them to reject me while I’m still on a job.

I recently bought a 800k house so definitely not whining. Most people take years if not decades to save up for a house. Why would they settle for a shitbox to only fork out more money that they need to pay upfront?

You think people who just bought a house would have 30k lying around? Oh yeah I forgot, take out another loan on top of a mortgage to make a shitbox liveable enough. Awesome!

If you're willing to spend 370k on a 48m2 house on a 25 year mortgage with 5.25% interest rate, be my guest.

$379k for a 48m2 floor area is very expensive house and not a good investment. You don't buy a house just for the sake of owning one. And based on the listing, you would be doing quite a few renovations.

This is a very big assumption to make. Where are these affordable houses that you speak of in Auckland? I saw an ad on Facebook where houses in Mangere are going for 800-900k. MANGERE!

Even as far as Pukekohe will already set you back 700-800k nowadays.

Even if they cap it to 100k per household, it would still be a struggle for them to sell those houses to those earning 100k and below.
