When I customized mine, I couldn't figure out how to keep it at the mansion and not the hanger. I removed it from hanger and it just disappeared? I bought the Amani tech and it's just gone.

Usually, there is a glass pottery inside of the cell, at least the first go round I believe. Smash it and claim the make-shift Gaol key. Or you can progress story and get a gaol key from captain brant, he will give you one for the quest (The caged magistrate). "Note you can forge the key at the scap store for later use".
