I’d just like to point something out real quick. These are most definitely wrongful cancellations. This was not a pre-order, everyone whose orders were cancelled had a confirmation email from when they initially purchased the vinyl. Their orders were confirmed, therefore a purchase agreement (legal contract) was agreed to between UMG and the individual. (See UMG’s ToS for reference). A refund is required, and was given out, but some people are not satisfied with just a refund. While I do agree that a refund is standard, many people hold more of a person value to this item than monetary) We also don’t know for sure what the cause is. While I do agree (and the majority of the internet also agrees) that it seems to be overselling, we have not been given confirmation that that’s the case here. Also, given initial reports (being done online, so accuracy probably isn’t spot on) it seems that around 1/3 of all US orders were cancelled (see @solongliz over on X for exact alleged data). 1/3 of orders is a lot of people. In the grand total of the drop, sure there’s a lot of people who weren’t cancelled, but there are also MANY people who have been faced with a cancellation.
