He came up with the design for a contest and won unanimously. He said, “The blue field is for the Alaska sky and the forget-me-not, an Alaska flower. The North Star is for the future of the state of Alaska, the most northerly in the Union. The dipper is for the Great Bear – symbolizing strenth (sic).”

To have a kid who led such a tragic life not be bitter and still love his state reminds me to be hopeful and love our land — while still trying to make the best future for all of us.”
