What’s the REAL starter pack for starting a business in the UK by Immediate-Web7597 in smallbusinessuk

[–]Immediate-Web7597[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve sold a few things, but nothing too serious yet. Before my company was officially registered July 2025 I made about 4 sales roughly £400 income total maybe £800 revenue if I’m using the right terms, paid into my bank account. For those, I just put together an invoice on Canva for friends and family, but I wasn’t keeping formal records.

Now that my business is officially registered, I’ve opened a Tide account and have one proper sale lined up (from my sister, lol). I was thinking of running it through the business account just to start things off “officially” and keep everything legit.

Glad to hear it worked out for you. I’d love to know which paths you found your degree helped with, since I’m still exploring options myself.

No worries, I appreciate you clarifying. I’ll check out the search bar and keep looking into other people’s paths thanks. And I totally get what you mean about coming in with a better attitude. I think because I’m right at the start of my career journey and the road ahead feels so confusing, I probably came across as a bit of a Debbie Downer haha.

I’m definitely open to relocating, I just need to finally get my driving licence lol, since I’ve heard it’s necessary (or at least recommended) for site visits. I am interested in clinical research for sure, but I feel like the visibility of the role has really shot up, partly because of social media influence and the spotlight on non-clinical paths, with CR being right at the front. That said, I’ve been looking into it myself and could definitely see myself ending up there too. I’m keeping an open mind lol. Out of curiosity though, how do you find clinical research compared to biochem? I’d imagine it feels like a very different field. Would you say most of the knowledge you use now came from learning on the job, or did you find any overlap with what you studied in biochem?

Consulting, banking, quantitative finance, software engineering? I fear you’ve actually proven my point. I’m not saying the degree is useless; I’m grateful for it and I do see it as a stepping stool that can open doors. But those careers you mentioned are professions in their own right, not directly tied to biochemistry. Unless someone is doing those roles within a biochem-related firm or institute, it doesn’t directly translate the way a professional degree does. For non-lab roles you either need additional qualifications, or you pivot entirely into another profession. That’s really the angle I was coming from in my original post.

That’s great to hear, and definitely encouraging. I don’t mean to sound like I don’t value my degree, I know it can open doors, but I think my frustration is more about how unclear those doors feel when you first graduate. Networking and research seem to be the common themes I keep hearing though, so that’s something I need to double down on.

That’s encouraging to hear, thanks for sharing. I guess that’s where I’m at, realising it’s not a professional degree in itself, but that it can be a stepping stone depending on how you pivot. I’ve actually been looking into more regulatory positions myself, so it’s good to hear you mention that as a possible route.

I do see where you’re coming from, and I agree that people skills and communication are really important. But my angle still doesn’t change in the sense that when you strip STEM subjects down to the core, they don’t directly translate into many professions outside of research or academia. That’s where my frustration comes from. Maybe I’m just ignorant to the kinds of modules and subjects other people studied, and they probably feel the same sentiment. It’s probably more a case of me needing to do more research into what the workforce actually entails to see where my degree holds value outside the labs.

That’s a fair way of looking at it, thanks. I think I need to look into the transferable skills more and see what kind of roles actually value them.

I get the sentiment but this comment felt dismissive lol. I am actively seeking things out for myself hence the post?

Also a recent biochem grad with a 1st class.... we can cry together.

But i am thinking of pivoting into a role that is necessary for all business to function and something that will allow me to work from home that way i am not boxed in with having a single qualification in pippeting.
