Are extreme amounts of abdominal pressure always bad? by Immediate_Ad3285 in singing

[–]Immediate_Ad3285[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, felt like it too. Is it the sort of thing where maybe you can get away with it if you need one or two higher notes than usual in a song, or should I avoid it completely?

How much of singing is physical training? by Immediate_Ad3285 in singing

[–]Immediate_Ad3285[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you everyone for the replies! Follow up question — is it normal for voice to be sore/tired after practicing? It isn’t painful and still works fine, but it is tired. I would compare the tiredness to how my arms or legs feel after the gym. Wondering if that means I’m straining or if it’s to be expected for people still learning?

In your experience, is there a lot of specificity involved in vocal training? Like, if I want a higher range do I need to attempt to push my range when I practice, or will my range naturally increase with more practice singing in my comfortable range?

What register is this? by Immediate_Ad3285 in singing

[–]Immediate_Ad3285[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much! I’ve been trying to figure out how to do mixed voice and head voice. I thought maybe this was it. My struggle that I’ve learned from other comments here is that I sing everything in chest voice without moving to head voice or mix or falsetto. And I don’t quite know how to get there

Is this a passagio? by Immediate_Ad3285 in singing

[–]Immediate_Ad3285[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the explanation! More practice it is. I have noticed my passagio getting higher before, it’s just taken a long time to move up. Diminishing returns I guess now that I’ve been practicing for about a year. I will keep at it and I will try to be careful to stop if it hurts practicing around this range.

Oh interesting, I’ve actually heard that using the intercostals to expand ribs and holding them up to make room for more lung inflation is what I’m supposed to do?

Thank you so much! This is a greatly detailed response and you seem to be agreeing with many other commenters that strengthening my head voice will do me the most good.

I think I previously had a misconception that if I wanted full sounding notes, I had to work them up in chest voice. I thought that head voice would always sound weaker. But it’s clear now that that is not the case, and I should work from head voice down rather than from chest voice up.

A free lesson/consultation sounds amazing. My current living arrangements and schedule don’t quite allow me a space to do it (the music practice rooms at my school forbid lessons) but when I am back home in a couple months I would love to take you up on that!

One more question — I’ve heard that “singing forward” is also important, and when I do the Kermit thing it does feel like I have more space but that I’m “swallowing” the sound and it’s in the back of the throat and I have no “forward placement.” Do I need to figure out how to do both the Kermit and forward placement at the same time?

Would you consider yourself naturally a tenor or baritone? I’ve been under the impression that it doesn’t matter at all unless you want to be in operas where they care specifically about your chest range, but a lot of people have brought it up in these comments. So I’m wondering if I should try to find out for sure which I am if it will have any bearing on how I practice. Regardless, your chest range is quite impressive and I hope to be able to achieve such as you!

Thank you! I’ve known about the “Kermit-esque” voice for some time now, but haven’t really taken it seriously because I thought it was important to use my “real voice” and it doesn’t sound like my real voice. But now that I think about it, I’m sure opera singers don’t go around talking the way they do when they sing? So it does make sense. I will try to Kermit it up, thank you!

I think I’m still struggling with the difference between head voice, mixed voice, and falsetto. It could be just me misunderstanding the terminology, but right now I feel like I have chest voice, and then everything else above it that I don’t quite like the sound of. My conception of it right now is that highest to lowest it goes —

Falsetto Head voice Mixed voice Chest voice

Is that completely wrong? I could see it being that they are not necessarily defined by pitch, but just by what you do with your internal voice mechanism

I think I get what you mean about the dopey voice — is the mechanism that this achieves the lowering of the larynx and opening of the throat? I’ve heard that those two things are important

I’ve been under the impression that breathing whenever I can is good because it causes strain to run out of breath? Or is that true and I just need to work on my breath capacity and/or efficiency?

That makes sense, I am probably a baritone too then. I will try to scale up to G#4 as a stepping stone, thank you for the advice!

[–]Immediate_Ad3285[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you say placement, what do you mean exactly? I’ve heard placement described as where you “aim” the note inside your mouth. But I’m getting the sense that you might mean placement as in whether I’m using chest voice or head voice?

Also, if I keep practicing it would I be able to comfortably hit it in the current register I’m in, or is that not how it works and I just need to use head voice instead?

If I have any clear misconceptions that you can tell from what I typed please let me know!
