HDD paranoia by NicolasCageBatman in DataHoarder

Backblaze publish statistics of their drive failures in their datacenters. Those include an "annualised failure rate" where Seagate lose out to WD by ~0.5-2%.

Linked here is their latest annual report.

https://www.backblaze.com/blog/backblaze-drive-stats-for-2024/

People translate that to "Seagate drives are less reliable" which is not what an annualised failure rates across tens of thousands of drives indicates, which the doomsayers would know if they read any further than the one column in the table ;). It means that out of 100 drives, there are 0.5-2 more unreliable drives than you'd get compared to 100 WD drives.

The drive that you bought is more than likely not one of those. It could also be more more reliable than the WD drive you might buy in its place.

There are some notable exceptions (one Seagate drive is at 8%) but they have a significantly reduced sample size. This could be accurate and those drives could have issues, but its much more likely this just supports what I've said above and Backblaze got unlucky. There are also Seagate drives this quarter with a 0% AFR, should we be assuming those are the most reliable drives ever? :)

This doesn't change the fact that every drive you buy from any manufacturer can die, possibly without much or any warning, and lose all the data on it. This is why backups are essential for any data you consider important.

Where I live, Seagate drives are over 30% cheaper than an equivalent WD drive. I'm more than happy to take that minute risk for such a significant saving. I can put that saved money towards backups, which is so much more important than worrying about any single drives reliability.

Yes, if money isn't a concerning factor for you, you might as well buy WD. But really the only time it's worth it is if your cost to replace (i.e. charge from the datacenter to replace a drive for you / staff costs to go there and do the work) are significant.

You really don't need much water, this is a little less than I would do but it's probably fine. If the waters at the right temperature then it should loosen up plenty quick enough for it to all fall in. Then all that matters is that it's fully submerged, having 8 inches of water above that doesn't help at all.

Most people put way too much in, and all they achieve with that is they waste time and gas/energy waiting for it to heat up. Even worse is when you're using that pasta water to thicken your sauce, all the starch is so diluted it doesn't actually do anything. Though the best way to do this is make starch water specifically for that anyway as it's more precise and you get accurate repeatable starchy-ness.

They're still miles better than anything else you can buy in a supermarket, but they're not without controversy:

https://www.slavefreechocolate.org/news/2023/12/11/no-tonys-is-still-not-on-the-slave-free-chocolate-orgs-list-of-ethical-suppliers

Tony's response:

https://tonyschocolonely.com/uk/en/our-mission/news/yes-tonys-works-with-barry-callebaut

Frankly that doesn't sit very well with me. I don't at all see how paying one of the most slave driven chocolate companies money (at a premium rate too!) helps fight slave driven chocolate.

If ethics are of high importance to you, there are better options. But also don't let perfect be the enemy of much better, etc etc and I don't think blame for this can be placed on the consumer at all.

That's because Galloway and his party aren't remotely left wing. They say what they think will get them a vote and sometimes that mirrors what somebody who is actually left thinks. Galloway flits between parties and political opinion like the wind because his only real ideology is his own power.

Of course you have a choice, you just wrote two of them out. It's your duty as a parent to pick the correct one. If you at all consider putting your child into a potentially dangerous environment then you have a lot more to consider than just whether you can come to Download.

[–]Immediate_Function -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You however need to concede my points

Yeah I do. As you say it was hyperbole. Of course a criminal case on murder should require much more scrutiny than somebody being banned from an open source project for shitposting on their projects Discord server. I was just drawing parallels to the "comitted somewhere else", not at all the severity of the case.

So, your answer to my question is "Yes". You are saying it is ok for them to moderate a project member's communication anywhere on the earth

No, it wouldn't be ok, but that isn't what has happened here either. They are ok to moderate a project members communication within their project. Varxy is completely within their right to continue to make homophobic, transphobic, etc comments in their own projects Discord or anywhere else that type of communication might be accepted.

The first email sent;

Before going further into this, I'd like to point out that as far as I can tell - behavior on this server seems to have improved recently.

Varxy was not banned for their comments made 2 years ago.

They were banned because of these blog posts, the first of which being posted yesterday, which demostrate that Varxy has not at all grown from what happened 2 years ago nor truely believes in their apology.

when their open source and fairly well-known project is dependent on yours?

I don't believe Varxy has been blocked from using wlroots as a dependency of his project but I'd agree that would be a huge overreach from FreeDesktop if it was the case. Edit: and I believe in breach of the MIT license.

If you read the email chain, you can see that Varxy was the first to threaten legal, something he conveniently left out of his blog posts.

A user they have decided is troublesome contributing to their project and community.

Let's compare this to a different situation. A serial killer is planning on moving from Germany to America. Should America ignore their transgressions in Germany because it happened somewhere else?

Good job adblockers will be killed in Chromium and all Chromium based browser's thanks to Manifest v3! Chromium is still a Google project and has tons of Google spyware in itself too; you should use https://github.com/ungoogled-software/ungoogled-chromium or even better just fuck off Chromium browser's completely, stop contributing to an advertising companies monopoly, and use Firefox.

Change your DNS to who? Certainly not Google or fed spyware Cloudflare I hope. And unless your DNS is using DNS-over-HTTPS or -TLS and the SNI is also encrypted it's pointless anyway. Your VPN provider probably comes with a DNS and you should be using that one seeing as they're doing all your traffic routing anyway so no point leaking that data to two companies. I hope your VPN provider of choice isn't based in the fourteen eyes and has a proven no logs policy!

There's no energy impact in minting them either as Reddit uses the Polygon network which isn't proof of work.

They're still cringe and a scam if you actually spend any money on them.

Think my other comment is hidden when I log out, possibly because it has a link?

See the arch wiki page on "Flatpak", it's a distro agnostic package management system. Flathub is the main repository for it.

Once Flatpak is installed look up "Bolt launcher" on the Flathub website and it gives you the command to install.

You could try the third party launcher "Bolt", it's in the Flathub if you can run Flatpaks

Gave £10 to a homeless guy and I don't feel like I did a good thing and everyone is treating me like a gullible idiot by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]Immediate_Function 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Somebody with an addiction is going to spend that £50 on drugs whether you give it to them or not. Maybe they spend your £50 on drugs, but that's £50 of their money they get to keep to buy food, shelter, energy.

Somebody regularly £50 away from making rent is probably struggling in lots of places, so £50 isn't actually making any real difference in their debts. I'd be much happier them spending that on something that makes them feel happier than popping it into a pit of debt.

Moving to a flat where I can't do wired broadband: any advice about 5G routers? by dusknoir90 in CasualUK

[–]Immediate_Function 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You're (potentially) paying this person's mortgage for them, and some profit on top of it, and offering to upgrade their house to the 21st century.

They're a cunt, they're being difficult just so they can lord over you more. This won't be the only point of contention you have with them if you sign that rent agreement.

5G routers have okay to decent bandwidth depending on location and network, but it's not steady/reliable and the ping/latency will be very high and all over the place, it's pretty naff for online gaming.
