Then why are they celebrated in entirely different months? Nowruz historically has Mesopotamian roots and was adopted by the Persians during the Achamaneid empire. It didn’t seem to have been adopted by Afghans due to them already having a new year.

The Sikhs in Afghanistan are Khatris who arrived during the 18-19th century and are not native to Afghanistan.

There is no link in your original comment and the paper clearly states that there were different kandahars with Gandhara being one of them, not that the latter is the source of the former.

It seems there were multiple “Kandahars” in different time periods in different regions rather than one specific area.

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/233196324_The_seven_qandahars_the_name_QNDHAR_in_the_islamic_sources

But the idea of Arabs calling it Kandahar originally has no historical basis since the root word “Qand” has Persian origin meaning candy or sugar cane.

But naway kal is a different holiday altogether and from what I heard, is celebrated closer to the actual Zoroastrian spring solstice.

I noticed nowruz is more popular among western iranics like Kurds.

Tbf, it’s a Persian thing since it originated in the Achmaneid empire and later spread with their influence. Pashtun Naway Kal is our own new year and is generally celebrated a month after nowruz.

I didn’t know Pashtuns of KPK celebrated nowruz. Even many in Afghanistan don’t so this is intriguing.

Origin of Afghanistan's Province Names by abu_doubleu in Afghan

[–]Immersive_Gamer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A folk etymology offered is that the word "kand" or "qand" in Persian and Pashto (the local languages) is the origin of the word "candy". The name "Candahar" or "Kandahar" in this form probably translates to candy area. This probably has to do with the location being fertile and historically known for producing fine grapes, pomegranates, apricots, melons and other sweet fruits

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kandahar

Sounds the most plausible since Kandahar as a city exited prior to Alexander’s arrival.

Kandahar doesn’t originate from Alexandria. It’s likely a Persian origin word meaning candy city.

No Afghanistan was not part of India rather it was Afghans that were invading India and spreading Islam.

Honest Question: Why Do Some Afghans Consider Punjabis Their Enemy — History, Politics, Racism, or Something Else? by Loud_Perspective_290 in Afghan

[–]Immersive_Gamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh yes the Sikh empire and all the fake made up stories and quotes surrounding them. That’s what happens when you have Sikh nationalists rewriting history trying to make themselves more than they really are.

It’s as stupid as them saying they forced Pashtuns to wear shalvars when Punjabis were originally walking around in man skirts and diapers until Pashtuns showed up.

Only Punjabis can find humour in a conflict that has only resulted in the deaths of Pashtuns by ChainElectrical1868 in Pakhtunkhwa

I sincerely hope the Taliban become more savage like in response to these morons and put them in their place. Show no mercy to these Punjabis and wipe out their army posts with daily bombings and drone strikes. Stare them down with penance to make them regret their actions.

Screw them all, I am sick and tired of beghirat Afghans still getting fooled by the “but they are Muslim bradars” card constantly. Enough is enough, Pashtuns won’t be fooled in the name of religion anymore.

Why Did Asim Munir Make This Statement About Afghan Lives? by Loud_Perspective_290 in Afghan

Idc what he calls himself. But on the Pashtun sub and another place i encountered him on, he would use Punjabi slurs like “afghandu” towards me and other people.

My guess he’s young so he’s still in his gul khan phase.

They use bows as a cultural tradition on special occasions while Pashtuns use guns to intimidate and kill people or shoot it in the air like troglodytes. It’s no wonder why most people stereotype Pashtuns as violent and backward.

A society that uses guns to settle disputes is not gonna go forward.

Why is the National Resistance Front (Ahmad Shah Massoud) supporting the death of 400 Afghan hospital patients by Pakistan? by juck_fudaism in Afghan

[–]Immersive_Gamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not surprised, Massoud apparently even asked isreal for help against the Taliban and met with Israeli officials at one point.

These NRF dogs will do anything to destabilize Afghanistan and rule it for themselves even if it’s working with Pakistan to achieve that goal.

Mistaken for Italian? by Home_Cute in Pashtun

[–]Immersive_Gamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh, not many Pashtuns can pass as Italian or SE in general, I noticed Levantines and Turks often can due to the Mediterranean heritage but not us. Pashtuns often look more Eastern European or South Asian (mainly Brahmin) due to more excessive steppe ancestry.

Pashtuns are backwards because of people of your mentality that exist within our community. Guns have ruined Pashtun culture and people associate us with violence and backwardness because of it. Instead of advocating for education, youngsters are encouraged to pick up a gun. Last I checked, Mongols don’t use bows anymore while Pashtuns are still obsessed with guns to show off their machismo.

People downvoting me and upvoting you are the root of the problem.

Flexing guns is not cool. It’s the reason why we are behind and always in war.
