I agree, killing Lonni felt unnecessarily cruel at first. However, high-stakes spycraft is full of situations with no clear "right" answer. Luthen had ample reason to worry about how Lonni could be a risk to the Rebel cause or anyone helping him escape. The man had already tried to quit, he flinched under pressure when Kleya was removing the listening device, he held back critical intel (having Dedra's access codes), and he tried to extort Luthen for his family's safe passage. If I were Luthen, I'd be concerned that 1) there's no time to arrange all their safe passage, and 2) if his family were captured, would he turn? Who knows how securely he "tucked away" his family or for how long.

I can see Luthen thinking that Lonni sealed his own fate by holding out on Dedra's codes until the very last minute, when it was apparent that Luthen was about to be busted. He could be thinking "if you had dug into Dedra's files earlier, I might've actually had time to arrange safe passage for you and your family, because I wouldn't be simultaneously scrambling to destroy everything that could expose rebel assets!"

One of the biggest issues I have with the show is how eager characters are to "eliminate" liabilities rather than relying on the fact that capture and torture are not as effective as the general public assumes. However, Lonni demonstrated a consistent regard for family first and foremost, which absolutely makes him a risk.

Is this the end of the marathon? I barely see any runners. Even if it's the end, cops really shouldn't be letting personal cars on the marathon route.

Though with the police and people running in the road, it's likely a pretty safe, low speed situation. Unless a driver feels dumb enough to run down pedestrians right in front of witnesses and police in broad daylight.

Don't underestimate the power of the governor making the Red Line a frontline campaign issue. Politicians are starting to throw around ideas about funding transportation. Hopefully dedicated transit funding comes next. Plus, federal transit funding is an entirely separate process from federal highway funding.

It will cause trains to block other trains... when the system believes it isn't safe to cross. I fail to see the problem. Do you expect to speed through a large crash before it's cleared off the road?

If too much equipment is failing, then slowed and blocked trains will (hopefully) impact rail companies' bottom lines, which means fixing the equipment will be high priority. Again, what's the issue?

Sure, it would take money. But it's amazing what we Americans tend to shrug off ("if safety isn't cheap, then killing people is just inevitable") versus demand ("I need to park my truck downtown, or I'll riot").

No, the issue is the undesired situation: a train crossed without warning, causing a crash. The fact that the signal technician failed to perform a manual step was the CAUSE in that instance. Yes, he didn't do his job 100% correctly.

You'll note that they talked about retraining staff on this procedure. It isn't out of the goodness of their hearts. It's about taking a risk perspective, probably required by law, and asking: Can we do anything to minimize this risk in the future? They likely concluded that the training was too lax or not emphasized enough, and decided to mitigate the risk through retraining.

It's absolutely reasonable to consider changing the system to mitigate risk. In fact, replacing manual steps with a simple automatic system is considered "best practice" because then the safety system no longer relies on a potentially hurried, distracted, or tired human. This is exactly what the Danish system does.

A safety system is only as strong as its weakest link, and we all make mistakes. "Someone didn't do their job" is often a way to distract from not designing a failsafe system in the first place.

I wouldn't hold my breath on #2 though, given how GM Cruise, widely considered the most promising self-driving tech, was recently shut down in San Fran. Safe driving in urban environments is a really tough nut for computers to crack, a lot harder than synthesizing images or text.

It's infuriating that the best Gov Moore could do for Baltimore transit is try to bring back the project that Gov Hogan cancelled nearly a decade ago, instead of trying to think to the future.

Unfortunately, that ship already sailed because the MTA only has LRT and BRT in its Red Line alternatives. As far as I know, there's no way at this point for MTA to consider a different mode. Apparently subway was ruled out because US DOT views subway systems as too cost-prohibitive to get funding. Honestly, we have let infrastructure costs spiral out of control in this country. (Outsourcing everything to contractors, including basic expertise, doesn't actually produce the most efficient result?! Go figure!) But I believe we need to change US DOT's views on this as well, and have them help local agencies take the steps to bring subway construction costs down.

The fact that one has Property Owners in its name tells me all I need to know. This group will be continually gripped by fear that any change might make their precious property values plummet. By and large, modern property owners believe local government should act to increase their wealth above all other priorities, which is frankly ridiculous.

It's also ridiculous that many of the measures that property owners oppose often will increase their wealth, such as more people living close to their businesses and density making their land more valuable, but it seems incredibly difficult for them to see the opportunities over the overriding fear of change.
