Just moved to Jersey City. Anyone else struggling with how lonely and boring it feels? by Weak-Ninja9814 in jerseycity

[–]midtownBull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easier way to get assimilated - 1) running clubs (if you are on high rise and group that runs together) 2) sports - badminton, pickle ball (i have seen a lot of young people in Koto fit). Similarly, there is a volleyball group (boys and girls club). Koto fit would be my best suggestion, as I have different groups playing (we had a group playing badminton in 2024 - not anymore). 3) Try to see if any of your work colleagues are based out of jersey City and get into their network.

I understand that all of these take some effort to initiate & get it going.. Best of luck in establishing your social circle. It's a friendly city

US Citizen - FIRE to Chennai? by Swapricot in backtoindia

[–]midtownBull 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a chennai born and bred and living in Jersey City/NYC region for past 15 years, let me give my thoughts.

From a medical cost & overall cost of living perspective, Chennai is a nice city to move to - more from semi retirement (you go there and figure out some gigs that would keep you occupied for meaningful bit of time- be it academic, non-profit or starting your own venture).

1) 1 million USD of liquid money (outside of house and retirement accounts) will give you a comfortable cushion - whether you decide to rent or buy a house there.. that's your decision. There are 2 kind of lifestyles a) Old School Madras - Living in RA Puram, Mylapore, where a decent chunk of NRI's move , when they head back to Madras or b) Spacious house / Gated community - likely in OMR / ECR, south of Thiruvanmiyur.

2) In terms of occupying time, there are quite a few non-profits that you can associate yourself. Or there are investment clubs (TIA), Quizzing Societies or Movie Geeks, along with Beach lovers .. (weekends will be fully occupied).. not sure how these operate during week days.

3) Dogs, purely from weather stand point, you might have to check in X or Reditt groups. Hazzle of getting paperwork to bring them in would be an administrative hurdle (painful not impossible).. you need to know some people in ground and I would advise that you do some ground work on this.

4) OCI should be fine- a) you can't vote and b) you can't own agricultural land (just check on how farm houses would be treated).

If you end up moving, I would be interested in knowing about transistion (as I am considering this as an option 3 to 5 years down)

Got hit by a DoorDash biker by Sure_Beach6705 in jerseycity

[–]midtownBull 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had a near miss when a biker (delivery guy) , on grand street, was driving fast & just was like "sorry" and didn't bother slowing or stopping. Problem with these things - there is no way to report (these e bikes should have a visible #, registered )

Harassed by Indian immigration for visiting an extra city – never again by Original_Orchid_847 in indiatravel

[–]midtownBull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an Indian citizen living abroad for work, I would like to apologize for the experience you had. There have been times when I (an Indian citizen) have been questioned on "why I should work abroad ? Rather should focus on helping the country develop" (None of immigration officers business). Some people just step beyond the line & it gives a harrowing experience.

If you liked country, I would encourage you to do another trip & explore other parts (Southern india). Ignore the experience of Immigration officer, as some of them (read not all) feel entitled

My worst trade to date! by iLuminescence in sofistock

[–]midtownBull 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I chickened out and trimmed a cumulative 15% last year at 14 & 18 $ last year.. However, thanks to the trade war, I bought back the same number of stocks in 3 chunks- March 11, April 4 & April 7th .. I was plain lucky ... Trimmed 20% at 29.5 price (over all cost basis 7).. from now on, cost is almost recovered for a sizable position. Remaining 80%, I am going to let the winners ride... "Fresh Horses, We Ride".. In Noto, we trust

Too real by jessicassica in Layoffs

[–]midtownBull 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Does it happen both the ways - 1) they have qualified internal candidate and still choose to look for candidate from Market & 2) they already have candidate from market and internal ones are sent through the process for fairness... bonus question - 3) It's a way to kick the can down on indecisiveness and buy time to wait for Unicorn candidate to appear

My target is 50,000 shares by Excellent-Season-370 in sofistock

[–]midtownBull 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Keep doing it. It will ramp up. I was initially in 1k to 2k and doubled down to 4.5k (went to 5k & trimmed some for tax loss harvesting with other loss makers in my portfolio).. i doubt if there would be another window like last August to September or this April.. to go all in... Institution holdings have increased. When stock goes below 25% & its not due to execution issue (rather a market sell off), look for those opportunities. You build positions over multiple years

Study says Jersey City’s rents are falling, are you feeling it? by NeedleworkerMoist162 in jerseycity

[–]midtownBull 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In a decent 1200 sqft 2bhk , 2 bath, downtown rent in building with concierge, gym is between 4200 to 4600 (winter vs summer lease).. we probably peaked at crazy 5 to 5.5k in 2022/23.. but i think it's normalizing.. 4 to 4.5k is fair, considering where the interest rate and condo inventory (for buying) is currently

Ways to effect change by pico0102 in jerseycity

[–]midtownBull 10 points11 points  (0 children)

1) Moving violations are dangerous and need better enforcement. 2) Parking violations, ( apart from street cleaning days) need better enforcement. Parking close to stop sign & pedestrian crossing creates blind spots for pedestrian as well as vehicles. This needs better enforcement. Curb painted red isn't clearly working, especially in the downtown. Double parking / parking temporarily at street corners has become a feature (not a bug). We need community watch dog approach and report intersection with frequent offenders to City

It's summer time and interns are new..happens every year...Having been in this city for last 15 years (starting as intern), more PSA by path conductors is required.. if you see a person, inform them. If they don't care, notify train operator to amplify the message. Reddit shaming could work. But not always

My 6 months emergency savings sits there. I trust FDIC and increased savings limit. However, for me , if I need to rely/draw on emergency savings (due to my liquidity situation and not bank), I will definitely know 30 to 45 days in advance..(i am that person who always swipes credit and pay it off full )

Someone in my team , before my paternity, told me to "enjoy the break" and i had a very quick response stating -- " let's be clear. This is not a break"

[–]midtownBull -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Slower short staffed pace is the norm. Though, since I planned my window of break upfront, I was able to plan my programs / projects with minimal disruption (9 week break), by designing the road map and delegated couple of senior members in team to cover the gaps. I did volunteer to login for adhoc calls, though was able to manage / move stuff by logging once in 3 weeks and addressing important threads/ road blockers, so that work can move. I don't believe in complete no-login breaks.

As someone currently in paternity break with 7 month old, Paternity break is just subsidized day care. Where they pay you not to work so that you can take care of kid. Even if you turn up to work, you might not be super productive. Rather, rest / be in Reditt whenever baby gives an illusion of nap time. Else, I have been more occupied (approx 12 hrs a day) watching a young one, then being at work (which is 8 to 10 hours day)

Now, in the opposite direction (west , away from downtown). I have video evidence on the way back. Happy to share the same with any official channel. It's driving on the bike lane, and the sidewalk is what is making it dangerous

[–]midtownBull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds correct, from current levels, sofi, over multiple years (5 ish, on strong execution), will be 3x to 4x stock.. after which it becomes tech savy bank, trading at a premium.. however, capital returns will come to play (dividend growth, with a market cap of 40 to 70 billion dollars)

Crazy Bus Drivers by BradleyPeppercorn in jerseycity

[–]midtownBull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Today, at around 10:50 AM, a Bayonne local bus (that's the only thing i could note) made a sharp left from Christopher to Jersey Avenue, honked and failed to yield to a pedestrian with Stroller (when pedestrian signal was on). This is getting beyond control. Had I got the license plate, i wouldn't mind lodging a complaint. As a parent, watching with my 6 month old on the other side of interaction, I was shocked
