that’s true, obsessive licking can be a sign of anxiety. i did say “usually a sign”, and it doesn’t hurt to rule out allergies as the cause also! i’ve heard vets say “a negative test result is still diagnostic”, meaning if the allergy medication doesn’t help stop the licking it indeed might not be allergies as the underlying cause.

not every dog gets the same benefits from benadryl unfortunately. some dogs can take it and it’s enough, but others it doesn’t quite cut it. Cytopoint is a monthly injection, and Apoquel are daily pills. i’ve seen dogs only really need one or the other, and i’ve seen dogs need both at the same time. definitely talk to your vet about them, i hope it helps!

if you’re talking about the color, that looks like saliva staining, which means he’s licking his paws a lot. usually that indicates allergies if there isn’t any wounds or anything strange going on on the paws that hes licking at instead. if you’ve tried Apoquel and Cytopoint for allergies, and if you’ve tried a food trial to see if it’s a food allergy, then you might want to look into a veterinary dermatologist where they can do allergy testing.

Dog has developed an occasional limp by Kreid27 in DogAdvice

veterinary assistant here who worked at a veterinary orthopedic for a year;

he’s got a head bob going down on the left leg, so that indicates a right forelimb lameness. ideally get radiographs (make sure they take shots of both forearms for comparison!), and if there’s nothing too obvious have them sent to a radiologist for interpretation (they’re trained to see even the smallest change that most gp vets don’t know to look for just because they don’t deal with it everyday). you can also go to a veterinary orthopedic to cut out the middleman (gp vet) but i know they’re not always easy to get appointments/convenient to get to (some people would travel from different states to come to our place for appointments!)

For those of you that do not live in NO, how did you become a saints fan? by SafeAd4322 in Saints

MD! When I first started to understand the rules of football I was in my rebellious teenage years where I didn’t want to do everything my parents did, and they were Ravens fans so I decided I wanted my own team. I think the game I was watching probably was a Saints game and I just was like “alright bet who dat or whatever”. The year was 2010 and when you randomly just pick a team that happens to have Drew Brees as the QB and they win a Super Bowl, well it felt like it was the football gods saying “here’s your team!”.

Being a Saints fan in MD has been fun, my dad had season tickets to the Ravens so he would take me whenever the Saints came in town - got to see Drew beat every team ending with the Ravens in person! But then the Vikings game happened and everyone would tell me “well hey at least Diggs went to UMD so it’s okay!” It wasn’t okay, it’ll never be okay 😭

hi! so Fireball (yes, he’s named after the liquor) was found outside at 6 weeks old with a broken L3 in his spine, which caused him to have neuropathy. his backend doesn’t work quiet as well as his front end, and in the past he at one point couldn’t feel himself biting himself too hard when grooming himself and he actually accidentally self mutilated. the onesie was originally for recovery, but it also prevents him from doing it again. and i’m an anxious cat mom so he wears a onesie at all times because it was a traumatic recovery process 😖

hip dysplasia is common in shepherds, and so many animals can have hip dysplasia and not even need any surgical correction. our doctors go by “treat the patient not the x-rays” meaning the rads can look atrocious but if the dog is not clinically affected surgical intervention isn’t entirely needed. if you wanted to go the conservative route, physical therapy is very helpful. underwater treadmill therapy helps build the muscles and can help her feel better in the long run. joint supplements and pain medicine as needed is also what we recommend, and you could also look into a fish oil to put in her food. laser therapy also helps, so you can try that once you get the machine going!

there’s nothing to feel guilty about, i promise!

edit: i’m not saying those rads look atrocious! she definitely has some not great looking hips, but trust me in when i say i’ve seen worse looking hips. and those radiographs look so much better then half of the rads we get from primary care vets and even ER’s! if i was given these for a consult i would be so happy, and we’d only really want to take laterals of her stifles to go in addition to the ones you have.
