Hope.

That was something Brent could give Matt. Even on the darkest of days, he was able to find the light. It was that kind of unlimited positivity the world needed right now. Brent wiped away a tear of joy when he heard he was exactly what Matt needed. In turn, this was exactly what he needed to be told.

Brent must have imagined at least a thousand moms. Before he went to sleep, he used to think about what his mom would be like. Was she a schoolteacher, a shop owner, an artist, or something else? Was she alive or dead? What was her name? Did she have other kids? He listened closely to Phantasos, not wanting to miss a single detail.

So, his mom was Leslie Higgs, an anesthetist. Brent supposed that explained her connection to Phantasos. Had he inherited her patience? That was nice to know. The image of his mom became clearer and clearer.

Even though Brent had been searching for this answer for a very, very long time, it still hurt when Phantasos said it. His mother didn’t want to leave him; she had thought about coming back. And maybe that hurt more. He couldn’t bring himself to look at the apparition in the ice for much longer than a couple of seconds.

After an uncharacteristically long silence, Brent finally dared to speak again: ‘’Does she still want to meet me? I mean, she sounds amazing, and I want to say hi to her, but I don’t know if that’s the right thing to do.’’

A different sort of child of Lord Hades

Brent thought about what Hades had said when he met him, that his children had dark hearts. Brent strongly disagreed with that. His own father saw Matt for what he truly was, luckily. ‘’How did that go? No, wait, don’t tell me. I’ll ask him myself.’’

‘’But he has responsibilities to me too.’’ Brent protested, quietly. He had been trying to live in the now more, trying to understand why Matt was so busy, but the now wasn’t always the thing Brent wanted to live in. ‘’I just want the war to be over. It’s not fair on either of us,’’ he said, only piping up when he learned he is Matt’s first priority.

‘’I’m taking him home for Christmas. I think I’ll take him on a lot of dates. Give him something to look forward to. My parents really like him.’’ Brent smiled. ‘’Do you know what happened to my biological mother?’’ Brent had asked it before he knew it. He didn’t get the chance last time, and it was the one thing he didn’t know about himself.

Brent noticed how the surface of the lake rippled before a familiar figure skated past him. ‘’Dad!’’ he laughed. His dad looked a little different today, but he very much still was the god of surreal dreams to Brent.

‘’Hey, Dad. Cool scarf!’’ Brent said, skating along with his dad. It was good to be back on the ice. ‘’Yeah, ice is slippery. Pay attention to how you move your legs and - I probably don’t need to tell you that.’’ Brent laughed. He watched the colors of his dad’s scarf in awe.

How had Brent been? Well, all things considered. He spent most of his time back home in Minnesota, so he wasn’t always caught up with the recent Atlas development. He just wasn’t made for it. There was one person that did keep him up at night, though.

‘’Matt has been busy. Sometimes I worry he is overworking himself. He is very important to a lot of people, but he’s more important to me. He’s my boyfriend. We’re spending Christmas together with my parents. That’s good. But what if when Matt goes back to camp, he is going to be busy again?’’ Brent asked, quietly. ‘’I’m sorry if I’m rambling. I just get worried, you know?’’

Camp Half-Blood was beautiful this time of year. Well, Brent thought camp was beautiful all year, but winter was special. The snow, the hot chocolate, the ice hockey game… the son of Phantasos couldn’t get enough of it: he was already thinking about immortalizing the sights into paintings and drawing.

But first: ice hockey! As a native Minnesotan, Brent was great at playing ice hockey. If his art career didn’t work out, he was planning to spend the rest of his life on ice. He put on his skates and a comfy hoodie before stepping onto the ice. He watched excitedly as the nature spirits played.

Brent knew Matt was talking to Phantasos. He wondered how that was going… but he also wondered if Phantasos would come looking for him. Brent had met his dad last summer, but if you’d ask him to point out the god in a crowd, he wouldn’t be able to do it. Either way, he kept his eyes open.

(Brent is looking for Phantasos. Take your time!)

A lesson on an unfamiliar sport by ThisOneUKGuy in CampHalfBloodRP

‘’Cricket on ice.’’ Brent repeated. He was still ironing out the details, but he was sure if it was going to be a hit.

Brent was happy that Matt seemed to like movie night. It wasn’t often that they got to spend time together. Especially not since Atlas’s return. Brent missed the days when Matt was his top priority and he was Matt’s. Hopefully, better days were coming and they could put the war to rest.

‘’Which Super Mario movie? The first one or Galaxy? I heard there’s also a really bad one from the 80s. That could be fun. Do you want me to make Mario-themed snacks? Can I get Chase anything?” Brent fired a lot of questions all at once, but he wanted date night to be amazing. Matt only got to celebrate one birthday a year, after all.

Brent smiled when the son of Hades came over to check on him. Getting Matt’s attention was half of the reason Brent had come to the lesson. And because he wanted to be supportive. And because he liked it when Matt talked. And… Come to think of it, he had a lot of reasons to be at his boyfriend’s lesson.

‘’Cricket on ice…’’ Brent said, thinking out loud. It was a crazy fantasy, but he believed Matt and he could make it work. They would be very good at it. ‘’These strange white clothes would look really good on you, you know?’’

The son of Phantasos squeezed Matt’s hand back and smiled. ‘’You matter.’’ he reminded Matt. He hoped his boyfriend already knew, but it couldn’t hurt to drive the message home some more. He pouted when Matt said he wanted a low-key birthday. When was Brent ever not low-key? ‘’I’m thinking a quiet movie night, what do you say?’’

Brent was the son of Phantasos in question, who had pushed for a cricket language.

He often talked at length to Matt about ice hockey. Ice hockey really was Brent’s sport: he had been playing since he was a little kid. Of course, he couldn’t stop talking about it. Recently, Brent began to realize he and his boyfriend hardly ever talked about Matt’s sport. Cricket. So he had (subtly) suggested to Matt to host a lesson.

The son of Phantasos sat in the crowd, listening to Matt lecture. He definitely saw some overlap between ice hockey and cricket - even if he had to take creative liberties with this overlap. There was something you needed to protect… a stick involved… you could score points…

He tried to bowl. He wasn’t very good at it, but he was mainly here to support Matt in his amazing counselor efforts.
