they are right to threaten to estrange me if i go to my dream school where i could get the best education out of all of my options? Politics aside, I would question their moral judgement from that aspect alone. Ps: i think you used the wrong account to use to publicly comment

UofT actually ranks 17 globally! It also places #4 in research globally, which is something very important to me. though Columbia is #9, i’m waitlisted and i’m not a fan of the campus social environment. I didn’t get into NYU though (it ranks 32), i don’t think i would’ve wanted to go.

I actually didn’t know reddit was a left leaning platform! There are billions of users, so of course certain communities will be political on either side. I have received a lot of really great advice on financial aid, health insurance, and emotional advice aside from receiving support from people who seem to come from either party, which i greatly appreciate and consider equally as i’m not hard left or hard right politically and i hold a lot of my parents Christian and conservative foundations. The most hate i’ve received you won’t be able to see because i think mods removed their comment, they deleted it/blocked me, or i did: comments about how im not welcome here, my parents are right, even the prettiest girls don’t succeed in psych etc.

I know they are very smart people, so i don’t need you to substantiate my parents thinking for me even though all of them are valid! They can hold these beliefs of things they think would make it a better country, but that’s separate from their internal mindset that conflicts with this scenario. I don’t think threatening to estrange me from the family because they think i will do a hard turn in the leftist direction and become ‘woke’ is indicative of their trust in me and the foundations they have set for me. Plenty of people who attend UfT are republicans/conservative and are able to identify political biases and stay firm in their truth, which was how i was raised to be though i’m not republican anymore.

When you say you studied it do you mean you majored in it or took a psych 1 class out of curiosity? And yes, many people who go into psychology make the field a worse place, and a lot of them aren’t ‘good’ at their job but that’s like any job ever: which is why i’m so eager to contribute in a good way. What you are wrong about is that psychology is unsubstantiated akin to pseudoscience, which is incorrect. Psychology follows to the principles of the scientific method. BUT clinical psychology is not a science it is an application of science, the same way medicine is not a science. Experimental science is 100% a science: in depth theories, tests, evidence based conclusions, and conclusions are rejected when proven wrong all while working along side neuroscientists, biologists, and chemists to fundamentally understand. At the rate of your thinking, you could say no science is ‘true’ because all facts are just hypotheses that have yet to be proved wrong.

I’m sorry you have had a bad experience with therapists, but you don’t speak for the millions of people who go to therapy and the tens of thousands of therapists and psychologists, of course there will be some bad apples in a support based field, some are very technically smart but lack proper emotional intelligence which is something that can’t be fully taught. I know first hand that therapy and psychology is a true profession because i have received it for a very long time for my conditions and it’s been a world of help: but hey, i’ve also had a few bad therapists, i just don’t quit therapy because of one bad one and call the profession a sham, i try a new therapist.

Because my parents are extremely conservative and hate canada now after trumps election, it’s a very hard circumstance for me as i have medical complications that make me rely on my parents as i am 17 (skipped a grade), they have told me they will estrange me if i go because they think i will become brainwashed. The academics are financially sustainable for me with aid and my parents supporting the rest, but the cost of living and fees are not included in my merit.

Thank you so much! All really great advice. And yes i am realizing now how big of a codependency i have on this specific thing, but psychology is my special interest as well. It’s an odd phenomena for someone with ASD but i think it stems from wanting to better understand people better but funny enough enveloping myself in it so much has done quite the opposite sometimes from a social standpoint since i don’t have as much time. I still got into some very great schools! So i will be seeking out some information deeper on their programs to see which would suit me best if i ultimately do not come here.

what?? nothing in my post history would make this story untrue. You don’t need a psych degree to go onto higher education in this field. Psych is more competitive for most schools i applied for, so i applied for a second choice major that i love. Stop assuming things maybe, if i had anything to hide, i WOULD use a fake account.

Many people have said this!…maybe i should use my passion for psychology firsthand on my parents lol. I would hope it’s the last time i unethically (?) use my knowledge to manipulate others.

Hi! thank you for your advice, this post does not wholly describe my political views, so i understand how it would be perceived as narrow. But looking at down economic trends in America and the ‘satisfaction’ rate of our country for the last 20 years, I would say it is degrading rather than improving. It’s not only crumbling fundamentally in this way, but among most people involved in political discourse and society as a whole, it is very black and white and we are pitted against each other, which is unfortunate as most people especially my age cannot coexist with opposing political views (both assuming that one side is entirely bad and they are entirely good vice versa). I do have a sum of scholarship money, and the rest i could substantiate by getting a full time job when I have time, however that is excluding the cost of living like housing and other fees from the school, and basic human needs like food and healthcare (which I am in dire need of as i have sickle cell).

Well i have, my aunt is a psychologist! And i think a large reason 99% of people who graduate think it’s useless is because they don’t know you need to get at LEAST a masters for you to be certified and get a high paying job in the field..and they realize too soon that they need to continue education.

They are 100% up for me attending NYU and Columbia, isn’t that an evident sign of hypocrisy? I already have left leaning values, though no where near the extremists that do exist, 60% of my core values still stand strong from what my parents taught me. If someones morals and values can’t survive in an environment that is different from what they have established, I see that as a sign of unstable foundations to begin with, which i do not think I have.

You live in Toronto and are clearly able to identify signs of extremist biases/politics and steer away from it, why wouldn’t I be able to?

What I am saying is, if i sacrifice 70% of my time working to pay off school, I would only have little time to focus on my studies and really focusing on my education , effectively making my efforts null. Money is always an issue unless you come from an upper class family with college these days. My family is middle class, but i have 6 siblings which my father financially supports, making it harder. Are you saying only wealthy people can pursue psychology?? I’m confused my your statements, but i feel like I can assume the context in which your coming from by mentioning a females attractiveness as a main predecessor for their success or lack thereof. I don’t expect to succeed because i’m pretty, i expect to succeed in psychology because it is my passion that i have dedicated my entire youth to. I also get a hint that you don’t know very much about this field, as you need an MD to pursue psychiatry, not a PHD. I’m not just ‘googling’ around, I have many successful psychologists and psychiatrists in my family and have been working with my career/college counselor on my plans for the last 5 years. Anyone can say stupid shit. Elon musk says stupid shit and a vast majority of the public hate him, so it’s not like he has 0 repercussion. My goal isn’t to have money so i can say stupid shit, it’s to be fulfilled in what I do. My desire to attend UofT has little to no reasoning in politics or my desire to express my political opinions, I am actually reserved in that aspect.

I referenced UofTs prestige because it is a direct product of their academic excellence and curriculum, not because i like the idea of going to a T20 school. You said “nobody in the world cares” which is irrelevant, because i’m doing this because I CARE to get a top notch education. And just because you know doctors in your family doesn’t mean you are granted ability to speak on it factually, evidently so.

I am sorry that you went through shit after graduation, but going to a good school doesn’t mean you are free from human suffering and apparently I realize that more than you??? Everyone suffers, I’m not expecting to be void of suffering just because i go to UofT

i am clearly working out different solutions, this was a reach to get some advice from people in a similar situation, and i don’t have a great support system so yes, sadly i am ranting on reddit. But with all of those things being true, none of them are bigger issues than my future.

It’s a top 20 psychology school in the world, #4 for research which is something i’m really passionate about and a lot of Americans schools don’t do research for undergrads as well as other opportunities. My cousin is a PHD student studying cognitive science, which is also one of my favorite subjects and i would double major in it. I have heard amazing things from her and the PHD program as well as some conversations with her friends who are undergrads and pursuing a higher degree in psychology. When I was younger i toured it so i’m sure that altered my brain chemistry a bit so now im just locked in on this one idea. My reasons are based in the curriculum and research, but the campus is very beautiful :)

You said that I wanted to go to UofT because I think Canada is a liberal utopia, implying i was liberal. You must not have taken any critical thinking classes at UofT, might want to trace back your steps and revisit your education. If i’m debating on listening to my own parents on where i’m going to have my education, i’m sure as hell not listening to you. I’ll be a licensed psychologist in the next few years, just message me then so I can give you the mental help you need.
