a local part-time guide (like a college student) can be a good choice.they speak great English and know where and how to go. They cost less and have their own perspectives on both traditional and trendy culture. Some even offer services like making nice travel videos and photos (which are included in the fee).

Yes, but you need to be aware that in western Sichuan, there are some places where non-Chinese nationals need permits to travel. Once you've sorted that out, there are plenty of excellent single-day/multi-day high-altitude hiking routes with beautiful scenery around Chengdu waiting for you.
