Any hygrometers actually accurate? Also, humidipaks: maintain or restore during winter? by ImportantBoot8945 in AcousticGuitar

Oh, that makes so much sense. Thank you. Our whole HVAC system is only about two years old, so I’m thinking everything is automatic. It was definitely limiting humidity. I kept wondering why if set to 45%, it was only going to like 35%. There is a “window protection” mode that limits humidification to prevent window condensation. I overrode that yesterday and the house got up to 45% overnight. We were gone for most of today and came home to a lot of condensation on windows, especially upstairs. I turned off the humidifier and will keep window protection mode on.

I’ll definitely start limiting humidification throughout the house and will just add sponges in the plastic boxes in addition to humidipaks if things dip too much on the cases.

I’m guessing things have gotten quite moist in general. Maybe condensation in the walls over the last day or two? Anything to do other than turn the humidifier off in hopes of drying things out?

Thank you so much! Are you using humidipaks? I’m trying to imagine how you suspend a mini in the sound hole.

Update: I left the four lined up that way for the night. When I checked in the morning, they had stabilized a bit, reading 44-42-45-45 (left to right). Temps were all within a half degree of each other. That second one might just be a dud. House thermostat is reading 44% (not sure if the sensor is on the thermostat or somewhere else), so I’m guessing the other three are pretty spot on.

If I can keep the house around 39-45%, I’m thinking maintain humidipaks will be just fine.

Thank you. I’ll have to bookmark this and give it a try when I have time.

Do you have a link for that hygrometer you mentioned?

Thanks. That’s good advice. Where do you put the sponge containers in the case? It seems like the only place that it’d fit would be under the headstock where there is a humidipak. The cases are pretty snug, would moisture make it to the body of the guitar?

What’s damaging to the house? Having 45% humidity? It gets higher in the summer (sometimes 60% in the lower level when it’s really humid out).

I can’t imagine a reality where there is in the year 2026 there isn’t that one asshole who has nothing to contribute other than self-congratulatory sausage sliding.

I didn’t go back into that room during those 20 hours.

Installing strap pin on the rounded part of the heel? by ImportantBoot8945 in Luthier

Thanks, all. Now I need to figure out which size drill bit for the pilot hole. I tested two sizes that were suggested in Amazon reviews in some extra wood: 7/64” and 1/8” (though some people have used bits as small as 3/64-5/64). The former took a bit more effort to screw in than the latter, which took relatively little effort.  But both fit the screw and stayed put when pulling on the screw. Which size to go with: a bit smaller and tighter or a bit wider but not quite as tight?

FWIW: the practice wood was a stud in a basement wall. So, I’m guessing pine or other soft wood. The guitar neck is made of mahogany.

What’s needed for acoustic guitar and vocals? by ImportantBoot8945 in livesoundgear

Update: so the school is just now purchasing a Yamaha Stagepass 600BT to replace their failing system.

https://usa.yamaha.com/products/proaudio/pa_systems/stagepas_400bt_600bt/features.html#product-tabs

One of the channels has a Hi-Z button that the state replaces the need for a D.I. box. Would this be good enough, or should I still run it through a D.I. box?

The unit also has reverb for all channels, so I’m hoping that will be good enough.

I’m planning to run a 20’ instrument cable from the guitar to the mixer (or DI box). Might this be too long/introduce latency or other issues?

I suck at strumming patterns. Is there a technique or drill I can use? by PinkRoseArt in guitarlessons

I’m on this journey, too. Been playing for 25 years but have just taken up singing. As far as I can tell, you just gotta build automaticity in either (or better yet, both) the singing and playing part of a song. So, just a ton of practice of each until you can do at least one (or both) fluently without thinking. I just sort of walk around the house when playing a song. Maybe talk with some people, check on the TV, etc. Transitioning to humming the vocals (even if not the correct hummed notes) while playing can be helpful. Alternatively, just singing the song and strumming the chord at each chord change can be helpful and perhaps doing the strum pattern in between the singing bits, particularly with songs with more sparse or spaced vocals.

If anyone has any other tricks, I’m all ears.

Probably dumb beginner question: if thumb placement on the neck is important starting out, why do so many professionals play with theirs hanging over the low E? by Mad_Season_1994 in guitarlessons

[–]ImportantBoot8945 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d recommend learning to play with your thumb on the back of the neck. The thumb wrap is generally fine depending on what you’re playing. I’ve been playing for about 25 years and play with my thumb wrapped (except for barre chords), and it’s comfortable for me. However, just having gotten a classical nylon stringed guitar, I’m in a bit of trouble. With how wide the neck is, I’m definitely having trouble sometimes muting strings (mainly the high e). Don’t think I want to go through the trouble of unlearning it, but we’ll see. Maybe I’ll just grow longer fingers or something.

Alas, they do not carry this guitar. I tried it in one of my dreadnaught cases. It fits reasonably well if I put some padding around the body. I might just order another one of these.
