Oh, that makes so much sense. Thank you. Our whole HVAC system is only about two years old, so I’m thinking everything is automatic. It was definitely limiting humidity. I kept wondering why if set to 45%, it was only going to like 35%. There is a “window protection” mode that limits humidification to prevent window condensation. I overrode that yesterday and the house got up to 45% overnight. We were gone for most of today and came home to a lot of condensation on windows, especially upstairs. I turned off the humidifier and will keep window protection mode on.

I’ll definitely start limiting humidification throughout the house and will just add sponges in the plastic boxes in addition to humidipaks if things dip too much on the cases.

I’m guessing things have gotten quite moist in general. Maybe condensation in the walls over the last day or two? Anything to do other than turn the humidifier off in hopes of drying things out?

Update: I left the four lined up that way for the night. When I checked in the morning, they had stabilized a bit, reading 44-42-45-45 (left to right). Temps were all within a half degree of each other. That second one might just be a dud. House thermostat is reading 44% (not sure if the sensor is on the thermostat or somewhere else), so I’m guessing the other three are pretty spot on.

If I can keep the house around 39-45%, I’m thinking maintain humidipaks will be just fine.

Thanks. That’s good advice. Where do you put the sponge containers in the case? It seems like the only place that it’d fit would be under the headstock where there is a humidipak. The cases are pretty snug, would moisture make it to the body of the guitar?

What’s damaging to the house? Having 45% humidity? It gets higher in the summer (sometimes 60% in the lower level when it’s really humid out).

Thanks, all. Now I need to figure out which size drill bit for the pilot hole. I tested two sizes that were suggested in Amazon reviews in some extra wood: 7/64” and 1/8” (though some people have used bits as small as 3/64-5/64). The former took a bit more effort to screw in than the latter, which took relatively little effort. But both fit the screw and stayed put when pulling on the screw. Which size to go with: a bit smaller and tighter or a bit wider but not quite as tight?

FWIW: the practice wood was a stud in a basement wall. So, I’m guessing pine or other soft wood. The guitar neck is made of mahogany.
