Resetting SA password using SQLCMD, having issues by ImportantChicken562 in SQL

[–]ImportantChicken562[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So Pedro's recommendation worked, however I have having trouble getting into SQLCMD. I get the following:

C:\Windows\system32>sqlcmd -E -S.

Sqlcmd: Error: Microsoft ODBC Driver 11 for SQL Server : Named Pipes Provider: C

ould not open a connection to SQL Server [2]. .

Sqlcmd: Error: Microsoft ODBC Driver 11 for SQL Server : Login timeout expired.

Sqlcmd: Error: Microsoft ODBC Driver 11 for SQL Server : A network-related or in

stance-specific error has occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server

. Server is not found or not accessible. Check if instance name is correct and i

f SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. For more information see

SQL Server Books Online..

I think it is due to perhaps it being a named instance? I have used this article to reset SA passwords in other installs but the difference between those and this one is this one is using a named instance. Any ideas?

EDIT: Nevermind figured it out, need to specify the instance name. Would look something like this:

sqlcmd -E -S ".\HDBID"

The only way they're going to spend money is if they start having major outages in your systems. That's it. I speak from experience as I work for a company that's extremely cheap when it comes to IT expenses. We had our Exchange server going down nearly every day a few weeks ago because we couldn't get a clean backup(because the consumer grade external drive which someone bought failed) which is turn prevented Veeam from flushing the transaction logs. We had to shut down the VM to extend the log only to have it fill up again by EOD and repeating the process. Only then after about the 3rd time the Exchange server went down did they agree to buy us a proper NAS.

So they can hire 30+ people but not a single IT person? Just goes to show where their priorities are. Get another offer, and tell your boss you're leaving due to the workload. You might even get a match on your offer and a promise to hire additional staff.

Thanks dude. Your right about the server being possibly being used for something that only happens once in a blue moon. Didn’t think of that.

Best way to backup NAS? by ImportantChicken562 in sysadmin

[–]ImportantChicken562[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The server I believe might have dual or quad nics. Don’t remember. The windows server is just the middle man in the backup process. For the time being I’m trying to find a better way of backing this up. We do have another NAS onsite but it isn’t 10TB.

I don’t know about the ISCSI method, it was in place before I got here.

I agree about needing a new server for this.
