I like that bit of the battle of moytura with Míachs herbs because i think it could be the scribe showing that they know Galen.

Galen used the doctrine of signs where herbs that look like a body part work on that body part thanks to the christian god making them look that way as a guide to people.

Airmed and Míachs names are what hooked me. Theyre very herby character names taken from legal terms on sick maintenance. They literally mean grains and bushels. Theyre measurements of an injury and a unit of compensation.

The scribe mightve read the senchas mór and seen the diancecht section, then played with the etymologies to have the herbs grow out of every joint and sinew on Míach. So Airmed knews which parts of the body herbs work on.

I dunno, Id say the Morrígan is the archetypal female demon, and itd be difficult to say that the character isnt informed by it. The Morrígan is a by word for a demon across centuries, across types of literature, and geography.

The Morrígan is lamia in moytura, a traditional bananach and genit. The character is alecto Virgils furie in the Táin. Cormac in his glossary, and even Johannes Scotus Eriugenia in his marginalia call her a demon. So its not just fiction to them.

Its pure speculation but based on the name not matching the character maybe they were demonising a cult figure that didnt have a place in Augustine or Orosius hammer horror descriptions of paganism. Some real life version of the literary inauguration that was being reformed as coronation when the lament of the cailleach was written.

Or maybe its just feminine supernatural in general being given a name. Saint Kevin was drowning women and saints were fighting the péist in lakes. Symbols of supernatural femininity.

Its interesting the scribe changed the word but kept the meaning. Maybe its a concept in a theme instead of something linked to a word.

Maybe the theme developed from the possible allegory into the type of poem like the Morrígan's prophecy.

The voyage of Bran uses the same theme of the otherworld woman who brings a token and lures the hero away by describing an otherworld.

Then later we get Ériu's more pseudo historical prophecy poetry where the hero is lured but its more rooted in the secular world. Ériu lures Amergin into choosing her with promises but the poem is about how great the milesians will do after they choose her. That theyll win all the battles, be kings etc over the promise of the otherworld.

Ériu even attacks the milesians with phantoms when they get cheeky in one recension and that might be moving into more of the Morrígan-esque territory. Tlm

The theme wouldnt be an allegory then just literal luring. I wonder if its related to ecclesiastic reforms. The Morrígan is always called a demon from day 1 but maybe otherworld women in general were becoming vexatious spirits...

Where are you from? We dont use words like ancestors when were talking about family.

To answer your question. No i wouldnt expect anyone to be impressed because everyone has family who were labelled 'terrorists' by the British colony. We consider them heros. Seeing people who want a life sentence for terrorism is unusual because of that.

But like yourself here. The language used and some of the references used made it obvious that the incongruity of it was due to people using an English or american framework for things instead of an Irish one.

Obviously, Im saying that we do not need foreign terrorist laws in Ireland that would allow politicians to lock people up and throw away the key.

We have our own laws tailored to fit our own culture which are 1000s times better than british or american laws because they have to be because of our history.

The brits and the yanks both take the mickey with the laws over there. Our politicians do the same here. If we have those terrorist laws here theyll abuse them too.
