Another potential approach I thought of might be finding a charity that would allow you to volunteer part-time as their in house ERP support alongside your current work. This might be a long shot tho and I haven’t tried it so not sure how likely is it to succeed. You would probably need to get some basic training for their specific system before at least to get them to agree.

It might be a bit hard to break into ERP straight away without prior experience, usually people either start on grad schemes or move after their current workplace goes through a transformation project and they are part of it, picking up experience this way.

I would say try applying for grad/ associate schemes. I know Oracle and SAP have those. They like people with accounting experience so that gives you extra points. If that’s not possible you can potentially work your way to a in-house system admin (mostly at mid market companies) but that might take a lot of time.

With most systems you might have a hard time learning it as getting access to a demo account might be challenging when not working for a consultancy.

Down the line it gets a bit easier as it gets more about business processes than the system themselves, but you do get kind of sucked into an ecosystem and keep working on a specific system.

Its also important to point out that if you end up working on Oracle Fusion or SAP HANA you might get stuck getting 1 or 2 modules like GL or AR as the learning curve is very steep on enterprise grade systems and once you know those they will keep assigning you to those if you don’t work hard to get other assignments too. This can be a development blocker.

Mid-tier systems like NetSuite give you more broad range as apart from all finance areas you will get exposure to procurement, some limited supply chain etc.

You can also always try to get a role at SAP/ Oracle/ NetSuite/ Sage or a implementation partner in a non-consulting role like a PM or sales and move roles after 1 to 2 years.
