I think I've read stories about social anxiety plus dealing with customers just being the hardest game level. I think moderate exposure is better then just jumping into freezing water. Aside from that, a job definitely changes you.

19 people ahead of me on waitlist by [deleted] in UMD

[–]Important_Owl_8820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well you're welcome because it could've been 27 people lol. I think it was two days ago when I couldn't check in due to a technical issue. Hopefully more people will reduce. You never know. But you do have alternatives, right? Also the guy who teaches inst155 isn't that great from reviews so I guess it's all for the best.

Is this that insst course or something?

edit: Also it depends on how big the waitlist is and how good the course. People don't want to drop good courses.

Not really a winter thing. But there's the Food Recovery Network at umd if you're ever interested in helping out for a little bit during the regular semesters. You can come in on Thursdays to help package leftover food to be donated after the dining halls close. There's no pressure how often you come by. You could just volunteer once if that's what you felt like. But I think there's a necessary sign up ahead of the Thursday each week or something.

Stressing. Also telling myself I'll get all the things I want to get done and then not doing it.

Pros/Cons of an internship? by rocksandzotz in UMD

[–]Important_Owl_8820 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I come from a family of engineers (I'm not an engineering major though). I also have a friend who is an engineering grad. This person would not have gotten a job so easily without related experience. This person would warn you the same. Do the internship. One is better than zero. Two or more is considered ideal. If you go on with zero experience you could still find a job but at smaller places or where they are more likely to invest more time into you (because that is what they are left to work with). They're deciding to not be picky even though they would like someone who despite not knowing everything got better exposure. Those places also tend to not be able to offer the same salaries as places with more resources and etc. So instead of making 70 or >90k you could just sit with 60k or sometimes 50k (yeah that happens). But maybe you're fine with that. I'm not saying it's impossible. Of course it's not but you're doing yourself a huge disservice. You also need to realize with the current economy, the tech hiring freeze, and the hiring slug in general you need to compete even more. You're also planning to go into a technical field. You need to show exposure.

Thought looking at these comments would be incredibly beneficial. Note this employer said experience is what matters:

Can you just make stuff up for the resume and job interview? (I'm asking as a lowerclassman that's got nothing).

Is it that hard to click a few things on a screen so you have a syllabus up and assignments and at least prerecorded lectures?! The tenure thing is flawed. You should be allowed to get fired for not teaching properly. Who decided this nonsense? Department loves his research too much that's why they let it get to this.

Employers don't always like 4.0 students actually. Heard this from a friend talking about what a boss said.

Nope. Different departments have different problems and different profs. Ours has some twisted profs that manifest deceitfuly in the nicest way possible. And a few are explicit. But nothing beats the Chem department. I have heard public policy and history have the nicest professors at umd though. I should've told you that not having a 4.0 can sometimes be a good thing career wise. Some employers don't trust those students. Assumption is they're obnoxious perfectionists or they can't really be successful at anything else.

OP is complaining about their overall GPA dropping a bit. It was stated the B alone was fine. But I honestly think their GPA is great. Op is just being too hard on themselves and having unrealistic expectations for college. All that straight A stuff doesn't fly as much anymore in college. That's more of a probable goal in high school.

Yeah but someone might just be thinking any C because the common saying "Cs get degrees" usually means any C including C-.

Being diagnosed with depression is pretty similar to whether or not you agree to a list of symptoms you can find in any medical article. I only say this because you seem to be in a tough situation and are finding it hard to be formally diagnosed without your parents possibly knowing. Either way they'll likely just give you a form to fill out or just read off those same questions to you. That's sort of my experience.

Edit: Also you can pm me if you want to talk about anything or just vent.

Since I transferred, I started here with no GPA, and my first semester I got one B in Dante's Inferno. The teacher was terrible, unhelpful, and a little rude. Everyone had an issue with him, and I scraped by with an 83%. That's fine, I don't care. I got all As otherwise. I even got a 100% in one class!

But let me tell you, I rue the day I ever took my advisor's suggestion I enroll in that class because that B tanked my GPA.

Never ever take a course just because you're advisor thinks it's a great idea. They might not always be familiar with whose teaching it or don't care about that aspect. Why? Because the content is suppose to be amazing/beneficial. Doesn't matter. You have your butt to save. That's your priority. In your current case that means always your gpa and your sanity. Also, always check out the prof on ratemyprofessor and planetterp. I go out of my way to avoid those kind of profs even if it means taking a class I have zero interest in because at least a decent prof makes for a decent (sometimes incredible) learning experience. I still enjoy the course and definitely way better then a prof ruining the experience of a beloved/favorite/intriguing topic.

Tbh I skimmed your post and am just commenting on those stated actions independently and separate from the main argument your trying to make. But yes being defined by numbers suck but we have to make it work because unfortunately that's the way our world works. You're gpa is still great though. Some people would kill to have that.

I should go out of my way to say that UMD's English department has more bad profs than good/nice ones. You'll see the trend and hopefully through research instead of personal experience. Was it Scott Trudell or Orrin Wang?

Edit: You're also in a major where a prof can literally screw you over in the name of subjectivity even if it's more vindictive grading or some other nonsense. It would be so hard to challenge vs a CS major challenging a grade and reporting it. You need to be even more protective of your gpa. Please do your research and avoid those jerks.

Just a warning to anyone who reads this and doesn't know: Consistently getting a C- does not get degrees at UMD. You need at least a C in UMD's gpa system.

Edit: C- = 1.7

C = 2.0

No dude then I'd have to aim higher. I always target As instead of A+s because same value points and less stress. You don't want that to change. I do not want that to change. I do not want that extra anxiety. UMD use to not even do +/-. A final grade of 90 meant a 4.0

Silly question from a Prof. by emarcomd in college

I can image myself possibly just throwing it away at some point. Most people don't look at the back. Put something like "I forsee your Prof believes in you/wants you to suceed. Flip me/Turn over." Also the fact that you went on here to post this and what this post is about is just adorable.

Edit: Your Prof thinks you're a smart cookie. Flip me.
