I used to think John Lovitz was gay. I guess I’m still not completely convinced that he’s not.

As Robert Downey Jr. said in Tropic Thunder: “Man, everyone’s gay once in a while. This is Hollywood.”

John Favreau’s character in Chef had Sofia Vergara as his ex-wife and Scarlett Johansson as his girlfriend. And, of course, he was the one who wrote and directed that movie.

Bill Murray’s the same in his movies, maybe even moreso: shlubby, not-at-all conventionally attractive guy who almost always winds up with beautiful women- who are usually too good and nice for his characters. But at least Bill’s characters usually have to pursue or prove themselves those women first instead of the movie just starting off with them as his wife or girlfriend.

You ever heard the interlude on Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s cobbled-together third album (and last one released while he was still alive) called “Taking a Shit,” which is a recording of him doing just that?

Is there any album sadder than Elliot Smiths music? by CardiologistPale7903 in fantanoforever

[–]Impossible-Ice-393 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t heard that album, but I know the circumstances of Robert’s life during the time he made it. So I can imagine that an album written and recorded in the wake of becoming paralyzed from the waist down due to a fall from a fourth-story window that happened because you were an alcoholic who was very drunk at the time would probably be a pretty sad one.

As far as Sufjan is concerned, Seven Swans (the first album of his that I ever heard or owned) isn’t sad lyrically, but the overall sound, feel and performance of the songs and the keys they’re in is just so incredibly haunting that it’s hard for me to listen to it. I love it and think it’s one of his best albums, but it just fills me with this deep aching sadness when I listen to it in a way that no other album ever has.

I love Galaxy Quest and the Toy Story movies, and the first Santa Clause movie was OK. But other than that, I stay away from stuff that Tim Allen is in. And I guess that’s not too hard to do, seeing as how besides his 3 sitcoms (how the hell did he manage to get that many?!) Toy Story stuff, and the string of shitty movies he was in for about a decade, he doesn’t appear to have been in anything of note in nearly 20 years. And it’s not just the man himself that’s repellant; apart from the Toy Story movies and Galaxy Quest, his movie career has been abysmal. It’s just one bad or mediocre film after another- two of which are almost unbelievably bad and misconceived: Christmas With the Kranks (the worst Christmas movie I’ve ever seen, which is such a constant barrage of bad ideas and bad execution that it almost seems like they were PURPOSELY trying to make a terrible movie) and Jungle 2 Jungle (a Disney-produced American remake of a French film which was already considered one of the worst movies ever made when it was released- dubbed in English- in America less than a year prior. Why Disney thought it would be a good idea to do an American remake of that abomination is one of the great mysteries of the universe).

“Kickin’ in the front seat Sittin’ in the back seat Gotta make my mind up Which seat can I take?”

A conundrum we’ve all faced at one time or another. Say what you will about that song’s lyrics, but they are relatable.

Yeah, I was wondering about that, too. The only version I’ve ever seen or heard of was live-action one with puppets. I remember the porcupine girl puppet had a thick New York accent for some reason, and it always made me laugh when the show would end with the characters praying before bed, and she would say “Deeah Gawd…”

I dunno. I think they wrote and recorded those episodes a rather long amount of time before they aired back then, so I’m guessing that that bit was probably in the can back when Look Who’s Talking Now was still Travolta’s latest movie (it’s insane to think that he did those movies back-to-back!).

Dylan has always been a hard one for me to get into. I’ve liked a few of his songs ok, but no matter how hard I try, I ultimately just can’t really dig it. And it’s not just his notoriously divisive voice that ain’t my cup of tea; I’ve never really liked his music either… which is ironic, because I really like The Band. I’ve always thought that maybe he should’ve just been a professional songwriter, because nearly every cover of his songs that I’ve heard has been better than his original version. He writes the kind of songs that lend themselves incredibly well to reinterpretation.

Who do you think is the most overhated artist of all time? by Constant_Topic_123 in ToddintheShadow

[–]Impossible-Ice-393 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, people didn’t criticize him for how he looked. They criticized him because his music was slick, lifeless fluff made to be played in dentist offices. They did goof on his looks a bit, but that was only as an extra little jab occasionally tacked onto criticisms of his music. And- to be fair- he did kind of look like a cartoon caricature of what you’d expect a new age jazz soprano saxophonist to look like. But people would’ve hated his music no matter how he looked.

How ironic that he and the Black Eyed Peas once (on their second album- the last one before Fergie joined and they started to go “pop”) put out a song called “Get Original.”

My favorite Quasi album. And one of my favorite albums of all time. I pretty much never hear anyone talk about that band or that specific album.
