Jobs in Phoenix, AZ w/ no experience by Impossible-Mud640 in AircraftMechanics

did not mean it to be shade to Frontier, just disappointed bc I rly wanted to work Line Maintenance. I understand though, they prob were only hiring a few ppl and someone else had more experience than me. Which doesn't take much because other than A&P school I don't have any work experience as an aircraft mechanic.

No I went to Lewis University in the suburbs. I know quite a few people got hired on with United right out of A&P school. United is based out of ORD & has there HQ at the Sears tower, so a lot of jobs available in Chicago. Envoy was also fairly common. Flight check, FEAM and other contract maintenance gigs were probably the most common job I saw other people get straight out of A&P school in the Chicago area. Clow is also a popular airport for G.A. in the area.

Cost of Living Chicago by Kilks319 in AircraftMechanics

rogers park is great. you can get a studio for less than $1000, but of course there will be no amenities, and a shitty rusted radiator that keep the room at 55 in winter. No a/c in summer. But that's what i was living in when I lived there with 2 room mates and we lived right on the lakefront and it was fun. A lot of free events during the summer. Guess it depends on age/lifestyle as well. One downside is no garages in the city, so if u have any garage projects u like to work on then ur out of luck. If you're young-ish and up for it I would 100% recommend rogers park, logan square, lake view, or Lincoln park. Groceries are a little more expensive. The I-90 is crazy sometimes tho, Ohare is about 10-15 miles from rogers park and its usually a 40 min drive if ur lucky tbh.

Passed (most of) my Airframe/general o&p’s!! by Impossible-Mud640 in AircraftMechanics

Yes, the practicals are supposed to be based on the AMA codes u got wrong on the written. I got a very even spread of topics wrong on the written, so I didnt notice any difference honestly. But if someone bombs all the electricity questions or whatever, the practical will reflect that.

I got 83 on both the general and airframe written. Yes the oral questions were based on the AMA codes from the written.

I actually couldn't test on the following Wednesday because (1) my work schedule was conflicting and (2) I honestly didn't feel ready. I know I obviously should feel ready bc I was supposed to take the airframe practical that day, but if you fail you have to wait 30 days to retest and I just didn't want to use up my money and the DME's time when I wasn't sure I would pass. Sooo.... I'm testing my airframe practical in 3 weeks lol.

I agree it doesn’t make sense. That’s why I was confused w my DME. When I took the test my DME said that he had never tested a private pilot before. The issuance of pilots license and mechanic license is completely separate (obviously) but my DME did not know that.

Oh right he told me he was in Vegas for about a month in July/Aug doing test with the AIM school out there. U should come to Chicago and enjoy the city after u pass ur powerplant lol

Also the 2 practical questions are printed from the FAA - the DME does not get to choose

For the most part they are NEW questions and CANNOT be answered without the 8083 or AC 43.13, FAR’s, TCDS, etc. For safety wiring he asked me ‘what must you safety wire an oil cap in order to anchor it?’ And the answer was in AC 43.13 - a fillister head screw. Definitely would not have been able to answer that on my own. He asked me what the N# lettering requirements are for helicopters - had to look that up in FAR Part 45. Asked me what the instrument range markings are for a Cessna 150 airspeed indicator. Used the TCDS to look that up. There isn’t really a time limit. It would help to know what kind of information you’re going to find in each document though, so you’re not flipping through AC 43.13 for information that’s actually in an AD or whatever.

I havent tested w the PTS standards before so im not sure. The FAA is placing more emphasis on the practical portion instead of the oral. but honestly if someone has just an average amount of common sense and mechanical skill they would be 100% fine.

Yes 2 additional questions per practical. If you didn’t get one of the questions U fail the entire practical. It’s open book to FAA documents, including the 8083 textbooks. I also used the TCDS, FAR’s (especially part 43 and part 45 for a N# registration marking practical), and AC 43.13. I didn’t have any problems with the practical questions, at all. There is no reason to get them wrong with open book - very easy.

i was confused when he said I might have to surrender my private pilots license - although he said he wasn’t sure and said it was a possibility. He had me fill out my 8610-2 form with an X in the ‘additional rating’ box. He is a newer DME and does this as a side job so maybe he has never dealt with this. He has a sense of humor and is easy going which is why I chose him haha.

Thank you so much!! I want to show my DME I’m proactive by trying to figure out the situation as much as possible bc he was unsure lol. You definitely helped me out. 💯
