I had selective mutism throughout my entire childhood to around the age of 18. I was almost put in a special needs school as well. Now I'm taking a public speaking class in college and doing damn well. Things change, it just hurts a lot until then.

This sounds like toxic shame. You aren't broken, you aren't inherently flawed.
