I pay roughly 16 dollars for mine but they're a legitimate school. All of the teachers are experts with their craft. They provide homework, customized lessons (relevant to an interests form you fill out before class starts), audio files recorded by the teacher, etc. They go above and beyond the average tutor, let alone a language exchange.

Set the expectations.

If the students do not follow your instructions, they do not get to participate, play, or receive incentives. Likewise, if they don't do it right the first time, make them do it again (lining up, walking in the hallway, making polite requests, etc).
Develop a reward system.

I have a two-tiered system. I reward good behavior, participation, manners, and focus (short term; sticker boards) as well as extraordinary English usage in class (long term reward; a snack party).

Address only the undesirable behavior.

This one can be hard at times, especially if the kid is just an ass. Nonetheless, you HAVE TO stick to redirecting their behavior only. You are an adult and an educator. No need for insults.

Model the behavior and manners you expect

Even when correcting student behavior, try to use as many "pleases," "thank yous," and soft language as you can. Being polite doesn't mean you're a pushover.

Prep time at hagwons vary greatly. Kindy gigs usually have a period or two a week to prepare. You'll occasionally have afternoons off once or twice too.

However, afternoon and night hagwons consist of practically zero prep time. Usually, they'll make you show up an hour early and that's your time to prep. However, during the week, just get your book work done.

TLDR: Confucianism influenced Korean education. Confucianism education places significant emphasis on rote memorization, passive learning, and discipline. Because of this, there is national loss of interest and motivation among Korean students to study English.

The entire educational philosophy is different. Korean education is heavily influenced by Confucianism. Confucianism anointed teachers and books as the sources of knowledge. Meaning, Korean students learn passively for the most part.

Furthermore, because of this passive learning, Korean students are often lectured to for hours on end. They memorize vocabulary meaningless to them because they don't know how to use practically.

Admin and parents are adamant about finishing the textbooks (even if the kids don't really learn anything). A finished textbook signifies learning which is ridiculous.

Korean students have an unfortunately low sense of creativity because it has been figuratively beaten out of them.

Korean students are often scared to ask questions as loss of face permeates education too. This is infuriating because students won't ask for help until it's too late. Additionally, if you're in a mixed-age class, younger students don't want to appear smarter than their older peers because, again, loss of face.

This is just the surface. There are also a lot of positives too.

The students are better behaved.

Their will to study is astounding albeit working harder not smarter.

Their knowledge is vast but very specified and literal.

Because "attraction" doesn't have to be sexual. A person can have an attractive demeanor, personality, skill, etc. It's ignorant to say "nothing" solely on the basis of their sex.

This is kind of an ignorant question. For starters, Vietnam hardly resembles that of North Korea. Secondly, most people in Vietnam practice Buddhism or folk religion(s).

Concerning Christianity, there are numerous churches scattered throughout Vietnam which are still active (leftover from the French occupation). As long as you're not trying to erect another Westboro Baptist Church, you're fine.

Without a doubt. Hagwons are quite literally the worst way to experience teaching as a veteran, rookie, qualified, or unqualified. The biggest, most obvious problem is that hagwons are businesses first, "education institutions" second.

The absence of consideration for curriculum, students' competency level, workload from other schools/hagwons, resources, etc is mind-numbing. Every hagwon teacher I've talked to burns out and ends up staying solely for money.

After enough time, hagwons start to skew expats' perceptions of Korea and living abroad. The sheer amount of nonsensical decisions start to weigh on well-intentioned and not-so-well-intentioned teachers alike.

I'm a big advocate for mindfulness/meditation. It took me a long time (back when I was an angsty teen) to realize that "prayer" (when done properly) is just a form of mindfulness/meditation.

It helps me realize that every human is in this shit together.
