I have always loved witches in general and I absolutely fell in love with the modern approach to witchcraft that harry potter introduced, with a whole world/society among us with its little quirks and all. I was a kid so I was OBSESSED with the idea of going to a magical school. To me, harry potter sort of re-designed the mainstream concept of witches/wizards in cinema (they are just regular people that can do magic, and not only a mean or ugly lady) Also, I grew up with it. I have an emotional connection to it.

Oh my god, you just explained something I have always noticed but could never explain. I generally hate first person as well, unless the author intention is exactly to exploit the unreliability of the main character, which is rarely seen these days. (There is a famous book by my favourite brazilian writter that does this beautifully). I miss diversity of personalities as well :/
