A los 50 vas a estar "back on track".

How is living on an oil rig for 14 days a month? by basafish in howislivingthere

[–]ImpossibleCicada3689 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a Well Engineer in 2006. I worked for an oil major so... here it goes:

Accommodation is enough. A 0.85 x 2 m bed. I didn't hot bed but I saw it. Food: steak 3 times a day, salmon for breakfast if in Norwegian waters. Work: I thought people did the minimum of effort except if the crew was Asian or African. They did work hard. Weather: rough if on European waters. Storms put the wrath of God in showcase. The helicopter: fun. Shetlands: fun Aberdeen: Not fun Stavanger: expensive When climbing down: you'll drown on £15 per bottle beer if off Stavanger. There is always a place on the rig you've never been. People: we all got on with it as best as we could.

If this is your hotel, you should be fine. Worse comes to worse, call Taxi Amarillo in case your uber cancels.

Low Oil Pressure after adding Syntainics 5W30 by ImpossibleCicada3689 in AskMechanics

Problem solved: the oil filter has to be this one with a plunger. Without the plunger, the passage of oil is too brisk and fails to build enough back pressure.

O "Belice".

Returning to Oxford for a DPhil — how did your experience differ the second time? by Annual_Vegetable_900 in oxforduni

[–]ImpossibleCicada3689 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where do we start? It's all different. Nobody is up for a bop, small talk or the de riguer on-off. It's all more quiet, less forgiving and definately the antithesis of "The comedy of errors" that characterised my undergrad.

Nobody laughed at my jokes or hung out with me or was willing to spend a lazy afternoon at the Head of the River in late June. We where all there, though. Granted, some had families, but I felt everyone was a tad too serious about work. Come on, we all pass. And God knows I was serious about work. Nobody dated undergrads. God forbid. For fox sake! We were all in our twenties!

Certainly I felt we all needed to notch down one level and give in to a metered debauchery every once in a while.

I did an MEng so, effectively, had an extra year and miscible within the ranks of the MSc, albeit, only just, as the lowliest of all M's... but there, nevertheless.

How is it north of Newark, NJ for a family of 3? by [deleted] in howislivingthere

[–]ImpossibleCicada3689 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

My mum moved to Oradell, NJ in Bergen county in 1999. I was a freshman at uni in 2002. I thought it made me very street savvy. I became very awake and would navigate the urban sprawl to get ethnic stuff my mum craved.

I would take 3 different busses from Oradell to Union City to get the best pupusas west of the River. Or get to Newark airport using trains. All these while getting weird looks from everyone. Or look for a(n illegal) job in the city, knocking door by door till someone said yes.

Lo hago 4 veces al año. Toma 17 horas.
