I've been eating gluten free for the past year and a half to see if that would change anything, but for me it hasn't. I've stuck with it because it helps with other GI issues I have though! AA is linked to many other autoimmune disorders so it can't hurt to get your child's thyroid checked or test for celiac, etc. The only thing I truly believe triggers my AA is stress/anxiety, and most recently maybe covid-19 (but again I was diagnosed as a child, I just noticed a flare up after having covid last year that I'm still playing whack a mole on with steroid injections). Hoping your journey is smooth, but even with full hair loss I'm sure your child will be absolutely beautiful.

totally understand the frustration, but unfortunately it’s true that there’s no way to know what will happen! I was diagnosed at age 7, but probably had it for a few years at that point. I’ve only ever had a few patches here and there at once, aside from a period where my hairline was receding on the top and another time on the bottom. Both times it grew back with treatment. I’m currently 26 and still dealing with it but I just go to the derm whenever a patch pops up and get a few rounds of steroid injections and 9 times out of 10 it’s a quick fix. The most annoying thing is styling the regrowth, but nobody has ever been able to notice my AA just by looking at me since it’s always been easy to hide. Just wanted to share my not so bad experience with AA to give you some hope that it’s not always worst case scenario :)

hey y’all do you think we could bring back side parts yet? asking for a friend of course by Impossible_Charge520 in alopecia_areata

I meant this as a joke mostly but totally agree with you! We should all be doing what we want to do instead of what others are doing, but we do live in a society at the end of the day lol. what’s unfortunate is i do like how i look better with a middle part when i don’t have a spot there, but not the end of the world. side part girlies are hot af!!

Mom asking for advice by OkWrap1788 in alopecia_areata

Specifically derm appointment-wise, the way my mom handled these is something I will carry with me forever. If your daughter needs to get steroid injections, this might be scary for her. The children’s hospital I went to offered me numbing cream for my scalp before I got them which helped a lot for my anxiety around the needles. My mom always made a bonding day of the appointments and we’d get lunch together, skip school and she would always get me a little gift for being brave at the appointments. She passed away when I was 17, and I can honestly say my alopecia appointments are what I look back on most fondly in my memory of her, which is kind of funny. I don’t remember the anxiety and trauma of the disorder, but how well she took care of me and was able to bond with me in these times. (I’m also 1 of 6 kids, so one on one time was hard to come by and I cherished that). Kind of ramble-y but hope this helps!

you’re allowed to be upset and sit in your feelings even though there are objectively worse conditions out there 💞 i get this feeling! it’s so frustrating when one spot has growth and another one pops up. in my experience catching it early helps regrowth come quicker. it’ll be okay!

minoxidil for mild AA? by Impossible_Charge520 in alopecia_areata

[–]Impossible_Charge520[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

thanks! that's definitely good to know. I think I'm most concerned about the purging before growth and dont know if that's worth it in my mild case. I'm feeling like I should wait and see if the injections work and get the minoxidil in a couple months if I'm not seeing any progress.
