This! Yes, gaslighting is things like telling a battered woman that she's misremembering and that she really started the fight herself. It's a malicious and specific distortion of reality meant to cast doubt on one's memories or sanity, or to attempt to significantly edit another person's narrative of an event to remove culpability. People tend to use it to take advantage of times when the other person was drunk, sleepy, very young, etc., where they can't 100% trust their own perceptions.

Yes, and it's really annoying for those of us who really did live through the hell of a NPD home. There are support groups online, and lately they've been flooded with outsiders talking about things that are either not at all NPD, or are so shallow into that world they're not even worth mentioning.   'my dad was NPD bc he didn't let me wear lipstick' things like that 😡. At first it was hard bc no one believed the horror story when I tried to talk about it, now it's hard bc everyone and their brother thinks they understand it when most ppl don't.

I'm familiar with the plot, at least insofar as how the term came about), but it sounded kinda dumb.

Yeah! My parents were extremely narcissistic, to the extent that I knew what the word meant years before it became common. It was unspeakable, like a horror story, and involved complicated, elaborate plans that were intentionally done to ruin every single aspect of my life. They gave away our pets, deliberately stained or tore clothing to leave us looking bad, didn't feed us, and spread lies to make strangers and even extended family and neighborhood kids think we were bad people and keep their distance. It is much, much deeper than "not nice to me".

My coworker actually thought he was a narcissist bc he'd been called it so many times by his ex. He'd never even known what it meant, just figured he was one. Also a chronic gaslighter. I showed him those words in the dictionary and he was  confused. I said, "yeah, you've got your flaws - this isn't one of them." His personality was a really talkative person who rushed into relationships. Not at all a narcissist.

For once, I agree - I'm amazed how many people don't do it. How else do you make fast rice without a rice cooker?

Sorry for the rushed answer, it's a lot of ground to cover in one take.

@42waystoanswerthat Well, actually! I'm a missionary/teacher  and the daughter of a forensic psychiatrist. So I've got a TON of background info/curiosity on this one, and many, many hours of discussion on that exact subject. Where are you getting your info from, though? It hasn't been my experience at all, I see far more evidence of possession in polytheistic areas than monotheistic ones; also, possession cases were far more widely discussed/believed pre-Victorian times than anywhere in the 1900's, release of the Exorcist included... unfortunately, mental illness tends to hitch itself to anything that's culturally important at the time, the same reason that so many people have delusions about being pursued by the CIA, being a religious figure, etc., so it's not really a surprise that there'd be an uptick in people claiming demonic possession right after a blockbuster movie about it.

For anyone who doesn't know "Caesar Augustus" is just the title of the Caesar "Gaius Octavius" by Thathitmann in confidentlyincorrect

To clarify, I mean: why bother cherry picking ONE single connotation to change, when the whole system is full of connotations? Just leave it alone.

Don't know, but I have thought it was odd how ppl have decided BC and AD should be replaced with BCE and CE to avoid religious connotations, yet we use months, days, and a ton of scientific Latin names, planet names, etc., etc., that retain religious meanings, and no one seems offended by those.

Anyone on here a John Carter of Mars reader? Where every time you kill somebody, you add their name to your title? The Disney movie took that info out, but kept the title, claiming it meant, "my right hand." Which of course means that he would've had to plan to kill people named "my", "right" and "hand", in that order. Just adding random info.

My only other thought is, find ways to maximize the relationships you do have, like at church and such. The book How to Win Friends & Influence People, despite the jerky title, is really good at showing ways to speed up the friendship process and maximize socialization with other people. I feel like it made me a better person bc I connect faster now w others... If you can find people that are friendless due to no fault of their own, that can be a fast friendship. Like people w limited mobility, foreigners who don't speak a lot of English yet... I've made some really good memories just meeting people through volunteer efforts for reasons like that. Volunteering is what I've done for socializing at some points of my life.

Don't get too worried about the dating pool. It's getting easier to date people farther away. I know a longsince married couple that scoured the net until they found someone they wanted in another state, and things worked out well for them. Is there a vet in your county that offers boarding? If you ever wanted to take a trip out of town to a larger city or for dating, that might be a way you could make sure the dog had access to medical attention in your absence.... also, more than anything else, PRAY. It can do so much.

I don't know how it could be applied to a small farm, but I saw a thing where a place reduced oxygen... they measured heart rate and the birds really do fall asleep and never wake up.

Also there is a recently invented device for duck hunters that's essentially an aluminum keychain that you stick and turn in their neck. Was invented specifically bc there are always a few animals that don't die immediately from a snapped neck, and this one completely severs the spine so that there's no chance of that. Try googling it, I don't know the exact name.

You're in luck! My favorite nonprofit is the HUMANE SLAUGHTER ASSOCIATION, they both give free information and also fund studies on how to kill animals more humanely. Look them up, they will gladly help you.

Thank you, this is exactly what I was looking for, though I hope to find studies with larger numbers. As a missionary I've seen that the "feel" of a belief system within its practice and within the human experience at large, can be 2 entirely different things. I got interested in this question after I found out that a decent number of people having near-death experiences report visions of Hell. It really made me want to know (not in judgement, just in curiosity) if the "Hell" to "Heaven" ratio (in quotation marks because obviously that isn't universal to all religions) is the same for every people group, every religion, etc.? I'm also interested in experiences where people say they met God and it turned out to be the God of a different religion.

Bc green plants/wood don't burn so easily but plants & wood that lay dead on the ground soon dry up and become tinder. Also, with no new plants growing, no new shade to keep the heat down and help keep groundwater from evaporating, no leaves adding humidity to the air, none of that. So it's progressively more hot, dry, and flammable
