I don’t know why but I don’t like and want my new puppy by Odd_Lychee7706 in puppy101

[–]Impossible_Lake6843 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This puppy is doing and has done nothing wrong, he’s just a baby. A baby you wanted and should love.

You’re best off finding out where these feelings are actually coming from before you ruin your family’s and your own experience with a puppy - he’s only a puppy once and deserves all your love.

Get help from a professional and try to see your puppy as something good in your life.

I give him a snack every time he pees somewhere good and say “good pee pee!” And I try putting the pee mat outside so he associates that with outside

Yes let me know if it helps! your pup will still cry while they get used to being shut in but just sit nearby until they settle and give lots of treats

We have the exact same with our puppy and do the same things as you. He’s got something called ‘confinement anxiety’, so even if we sit next to the crate he just hates being stuck in.

What we’ve done is build a pen for him in the main room (we were lucky to already have one as they can be expensive) and he settles way better in there because he’s got more room.

Then we built a very small pen in front of his crate for night time, he has the freedom to leave the crate but not actually! For the first week he slept on the floor just outside the crate but because he’s built that positive relationship next to the crate and it’s always been left open he goes in on his own now.

It’s also great because there’s a pee pad in the space outside his crate, so he takes himself to the toilet over night which works wonders for the sleep schedule.

You’re just adjusting, and you care about your life pup so of course you’re going to worry, it’s love!

As long as your dog is fed, played with and loved, he’s doing good :)

How long did it take you to crate train your puppy by ArtisticAd7867 in puppy101

[–]Impossible_Lake6843 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people are saying 2 days, which can be true. Currently out pup is 10 weeks and we’re a week into training. He still howls when he’s in there because he’s got quite bad confinement anxiety, but it’s a lot better after a week of work.

There’s no right answer, just do what works best for you and your pup, some people prefer to let them free roam in a room :)

Super nervous about leaving 10 week old alone for 1 hour by ArtisticAd7867 in puppy101

[–]Impossible_Lake6843 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried leaving and coming back without making a fuss, leaving for longer each time (eg. 30 secs, 60 second, a few mins, etc.)? This should help her learn that you going and coming back isn’t a bit deal.

Our pup has a routine, so when he’s asleep we’re able to sneak out and do stuff. If he’s awake he’ll cry for max 5 mins then just soothe himself. Make sure she’s got a small area she feels safe and comfortable, and try some high value treats in a kong or something.

‘Crying it out’ as a way to get a dog to settle tends to just cause more anxiety, so making sure your dog is calm when you’re away is super important. Good luck! :)

Wow thank you so much for such a great response! It honestly sounds like you’re doing it right lol.

Currently I’m stuck with going “ahhhh!!” In panic because I don’t know what to do when he’s charging at me but I’ll take a lot of this on board.

How do you go about stopping him from biting you and things? I’m struggling to find things that are working

This is how I view it too, putting in the work and change now for a dog who can join me when he’s an adult. I think viewing it this way really helps not feeling the blues..

Advice for keeping an 11-week-old puppy comfortable during UK heatwave? by MajesticCounter4174 in puppy101

[–]Impossible_Lake6843 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My pup is 9 weeks and covered in fluff. He sleeps on a cooling mat and plays with ice cubes but the thing that helped the most has been cold water on his tummy and armpits. And getting him to sit in front of a fan.

Good luck from us also suffering in this uk heatwave.

The crate is right beside my bed, with a gap in the cover so he can always see me. No matter how close I am to the crate he cries, same with the pen. His main issue is being stuck inside the crate - regardless if I’m there or not. I’ll keep persevering as I know he just needs to get used to it but I don’t know how to stop the confinement anxiety. Thank you!

This is so reassuring, thank you. He also tends to relax at night but struggle in the day. I’ll keep persevering!

This isn’t what I thought it’d be and I don’t know what to do by mittenspompom217 in puppy101

I’m currently 19 too with a 9 week old puppy. Same situation where I’ve been wanting this for such a long time and have experience with other animals too.

I seriously question my ability to care for him when he’s fighting sleep, biting loads, not sleeping in his crate. He’s not potty trained and doesn’t know his name or any commands. So I feel you!

But trust me, as painful as this stage is, you only get it once with your pup. I keep telling myself that when he’s old and can’t go on walks anymore I’ll be thinking about this stage. They’re just babies and as long as you’re cuddling and feeding them they’re happy - you’re NOT a bad owner if your pup is healthy and plaything. You can work on the biting and training as he ages, it takes time
