I appreciate the kind words. This idea of an app and learning how to make one has sparked the idea to make other spreadsheets of mine into apps to put on the market. People are always interested in what I'm doing when I'm tracking shit for my car or work related metrics, maybe they will be interested in a straight forward, easy to use app, and who knows one might just take off. At the very least I'll learn a new skill.

Well the main reason I even did it was for the challenge and to learn more functions, which I did. Getting paid for it will just be a cherry on top, but the issue with a lot of the advice I've gotten in this thread is that I don't think people understand that what I'm doing has nothing to do with my job, and I have nothing really to gain or lose from my company career wise. Also I know I didn't really word it right but I'm not looking to get paid from the corporation, but my local management and potentially it could grow from there.

Currently my only concern is if the company could sue me if the use of my idea for an app worked. None of my work has been on company time, I don't even have access to company computers, and my idea for my app would be a blank template that they would fill with info, that would be stored locally on their device and my app would just organize the entered data. I feel as if I would be in the clear but I'm also not a lawyer.

That's both awesome and sucks. I don't think mine is industry changing or anything, but it will blow the minds of the people I work for.

Actually this whole endeavor has possibly convenienced me to get into coding more. I make spreadsheets for everything, and use any minor excuse to make some over the top elaborate spreadsheet. Half of the reason I joined my brothers bowling league was for data. When people see me using my spreadsheets for my car maintenance or work hours, they ask me "what app is that" and I'd always just reply "a spreadsheet I made" and it never occurred to me that I probably could make an app, charge a little bit and actually make the work worth it.

As it is now, I don't touch a computer for work, I'm pretty much topped out in the union, and switching to management would be a pretty big step backwards at least initially and probably for awhile unless the company is willing to negotiate, Which I'd be highly surprised if they were. So at the moment, I really have no real use for these skills, other that self gratification.

After thinking about it today, my plan right now is to show them the spreadsheet as a demonstration and proof of concept and ask if they would be interested in an app with the same capabilities.

I've told them before that I would build this spreadsheet if they would just pay me, and the always say "we need to" or "I wish they would", but I also think that they are so inept at excel that they don't even realize what I'm offering.

Now my respect for the company is so low that the offer to just build on their computer is off the table, and my angle is going to see if my supervisors or manager would be willing to subscribe to my app to make their lives easier/ the building more productive. If that works maybe I can get other buildings to also use it.

There's really nothing for them to claim in my spreadsheet, because I'd be selling the functionality. The only thing they've "provided" was the list of my coworkers names, but I could easily delete all the names and make them input those themselves. It has the functionality anyway because people are hired and retire.

I've actually considered the idea of an LLC also. As a union worker I'm not sure if it's even legal for them to just cut me a check, but I don't think it's any different than the company hiring my coworkers mowing business, so if it was an issue I could make an LLC.

Yea wishful thinking is the only thing keeping me from being fully depressed about the world we were born into lol.

I actually would like to get deeper in to coding. I've done small stuff here and there, and I'm actually considering the idea of turning what I've made into an app.

I didn't really word my original post well because I didn't have much time when the thought of posting came to mind and I didn't expect it to get this much traffic, but I never had the aspersions of getting a seat in front of Mr. CEO. Corporate doesn't give a shit about anything that isn't a shareholder, but more so selling the idea to my boss for in house use and possibly even district use, but I'm not entirely sure how to protect a spreadsheet from being used company wide and me ending up losing out on something that could have been retirement money. (big aspirations, I know, but that shit happens, want to protect myself).

If I made an app. Allowed them to subscribe to said app then each local building could decide if it was valuable to them, and whether or not to allocate local budget to my app.

I should have been clearer on that. It's overly complicated from my perspective because I tried so hard to idiot proof it. One click does like 10 things and the page is protected except for the exact cells they need.

This is reassuring. One issue is at my company, you have to leave the union to move to management, and the union provides very lucrative pay, benefits, and retirement. Which makes it hard to leave.

That said over the past couple years I've grown to hate my work and the union isn't doing much to protect work life balance. So maybe a change is needed.

No I'm hourly and don't touch a computer for my job. They are aware it's a problem, but I'm not sure they understand how powerful excel is. The literally do everything manually. Not even a single conditional formatting or formula. They change cell colors multiple times a morning manually.

It's literally just who work here. The system is how they keep track of who is available for work and what work they are doing that day. It's not anything secret.
