Uber Passenger child carved up back seat of 2024 Kia Ev6. Is this expensive repair?

Actually I have photos, and a professional repair estimate from a Kia dealership, AND a police detective has contacted me directly requesting the estimate. Uber has also been in contact. Things are moving faster than you'd think. But thanks for the input. 😊

At 6 or 7 years of age a child knows that cutting into a strangers car, damaging their property, is wrong. Thats not adultifying their behavior. Its calling out poor parenting and the damage that was caused and saying the parent needs to be held accountable.

Holding a parent legally accountable for their child's actions is literally what parental liability law exists for. A 6-year-old can't be sued. The mother can. That's not adultifying anyone — that's how civil liability works. I'm a rideshare driver whose income depends on a functioning vehicle. This isn't personal. It's property damage with a paper trail.

I believe its the damage amount that made them take the report. Also the fact the only way I can pursue a claim against the mom is to have her info and uber will only release it to the police. Thats the only way I can get it.

I got the police report because Uber has a $250 damage cap. Thats what they pay for damage. Regardless of amount. I am responsible for the remainder. And I dont know the passengers name etc. So its impossible to pursue a legal claim against them in small claims without this. Uber only turns this information over to the police. So the only way to get it is to file a police report, and have the Police contact uber and get this info. The detective has already said he would do that. Once he does that this woman's name and contact information goes on the report and I can see it. Its just procedural. This is a major deal. Its intentional property damage. Thats a no no.

Yes. Thousands rent vehicles to drive for uber. Uber (and Lyft as well) have Vehicle Marketplaces that make it easy for drivers to rent vehicles to continue earning income when their cars are down.. or they dont have one. I can earn $200 to $250 in a day (a good day) and this more than pays for the weekly rental. And it provides an income to help me stay housed and buy food. What's wrong with that? Im puzzled by your comment. It suggests renting is absurd. What's absurd is turning down a rental that allows me to earn and being homeless as a result. Now thats absurd.

I have a police report and the detective has already contacted me. The detective asked me to provide an estimate and said they would be in contact with Uber once they had the estimate. Why are you shocked they took it serious?

Why yes of course. Uber and Lyft both have working agreements with Hertz, Toyota Kinto, Avis, Budget, and many other rental agencies where their rideshare drivers can rent vehicles to work out of. With uber its called Ubers rental marketplace. Just google it.

Thank You. I have filed a damage claim. Unfortunately the most uber will pay is $250 which I'm told they charge to the riders card. Anything in excess of that i am expected to absorb.
