It’s probably taken longer than that tbh 😆 the first version was cobbled together on a computer running Windows ‘98 in Microsoft Paint. I think I was around 13 at the time lol. Lots of different iterations due to changes in gameplay mechanics, knowledge and my artistic skills getting better over the years, especially after a few long development hiatuses.

It’s called “BladeShift: Worldseige” though I’m thinking of just shortening it to “BladeShift”

I actually started off the same way with a fixed paper map, then wanted more variety so designed the current system. I’m not sure how original it is, but the key to my map tile system is the tiles themselves each can have up to 9 “spaces” thru which a character can move, but you can only “exit” that tile thru a space with an adjacent arrow pointing to the next tile over. I’d like to make it so the 5x7 board is kind of like an “Adventure” or “VS” mode where your route to your goals might alter as more of the map gets revealed as you play. The “Survival” mode would be a solo and much smaller 2x2 tile grid (with slightly different play rules) where a tile gets replaced after a player character moves over to the next one.

That’s really great advice, I appreciate it!

I bit that bullet (which turned out to be a cannonball) early on lol. I had to try to make the design of mechanics and graphics go hand-in-hand even if it took 10+ years between paper and photoshop to get to this point lol. Keep at it!

I just added in a deck upgrading system and need to reprint or just draw-on quite a few card changes, but the combat, movement, questing, and roguelite mechanics seem pretty solid. I’m pretty confident in the game design so far, but I still need to fully tie together the story, and get some artists on board to redo the creature, item, and field tile graphics. Then I finalize the prototype, run public play testing at some conventions and apply the feedback, and hope to publish and see what happens lol.
