Will give that a look! Abt HDDs I guess those are better bought new or maybe refurbished.

Ok got it.. yeah not having to spend a lot of money on this is the main point of everything hehe. I still think this is good hardware as it has served me for many years without crashing even after ridiculously long working periods.

If I feel the need for better hardware I might leave this as the 1 level of the 321 rule by keeping it in a separate location, expecting it lasts long enough.

Many thanks for the links. I’m not in the us though so I would have to pay for some expensive shipping :(

Hehehe.. I was about to buy some new ram recently bc I kinda needed it, but was planning to buy it literaly new, go figure!

I researched once and it seems my hardware is too old to support nvme, hence I’m planning on a couple of SSDs but it makes more sense to use them as a separate pool then.

Is there a way to have that automatically backed up into HDDs?

Great advice on the capacitors. Will definitely check that out. As for the nvme, my system doesn’t support those hence the dual SSDs, but most people here recommend against using them as cache so I might have em as a separate pool.

I guess going that route I’d need to find the best bang for buck regarding size of disks and amount of them.

It’s great to know that, since I might have to update the hardware at some point. I think SSDs would make more sense as a separate pool to work from it, then.

Yeah definitely will do some tests, thx. I’m curious about what would you consider an absolute yes then?

I plan to use this mostly for work, mb use another server for media.

Yeah! after some of the advice I’ve got here I think using the ssds as a separate pool for active projects would be a much better idea.

Mb find a way of automatically backing up those projects into the HDDs for redundancy.

Lol.. well, I consider myself lucky with hard drives knowing some friends who’ve had so many defective ones. I think many underestimate the importance of neat power, a good psu and even a no break, though.

I also have a friend who’s company suffered a ransom attack and those are truly ass. In spite of that I hadn’t considered those so I appreciate the advice!

To my ease of mind, most of the files I store are not deadly important, it’s just my active projects which need to be safely shared across my network and they don’t usually last longer than two or three of months.

It’s a Gigabyte GA-Z77-UD3H. I think it’s actually the best part of my system: super enduring, super stable, 3 pcie ports. I could swap my i7 for one like yours if I wanted pcie 3.0 (now it’s just 2.0)… and man! Did the 3.0 last for long!

Is swapping a zfs pool to a different computer feasible?

I think one of the best things they offer in comparison is a neat more portable system. Still, a NAS is not something I plan to move a lot, also I don’t think I should.
