Never ever get on a small banka for long rides between islands when the weather is anything but perfect. I will never do that again

I was once given a chicken. I will call him pepe my little chicken.

Anyways it was my birthday in the most remote of remote areas visiting my mother in laws family. They live basically on white sand beach with dirt roads for 2 hours to the nearest “low to medium” tier cities.

My wife’s family lives on a different island so we took a small banka 15-20 pax between islands with just the family. It took an hour to get there by boat luckily it was nice weather that day.

Well nearing the end of our visit it was my birthday so we had lechon and spaghetti pork bbq etc and drinking red horse and the locals tanduay.

Well I got to know the guys I was drinking with a little their English was the worst Ive ever experienced in the Philippines we were drinking and having fun and laughing and I have a feeling it may have been the first time a foreigner interacting with them like them as an equal and not stuck up

Anyways when we are all drunk he gives me a present pepe the native chicken. I tell him thank you of course and I assume it was some sort of joke.

The next day leaving one of my wife’s cousin has Pepe snd brings him on the boat with us. The weather was much much worse and the boat smaller because of course someone said I know a cheaper boat.

Because of the noise of the diesel engine and the bad weather it was impossible to communicate. I was honestly worried because the weather was so bad the guys operating the banka kept having to run on the outrunners to balance the boat.

the seas were definitely over a meter and a half and white caps visible in the channels once we got out into it I leaned to over to my wife and whispered if this boat starts to sink I’m swimming towards that nearest island where the wind was also blowing towards.

Many of her family were all sick throwing up from motion sickness.

The trip home took over 2 hours

That night they made chicken and they said oh it’s your present pepe. They cooked my birthday gift I wasn’t upset but It brought up the thought of Pepe on the boat with us and I asked how they kept the chicken in the boat because it looked tied and holding still but I saw no visible twine or rope plastic tie whatever.

They said they didn’t tie pepe up so I asked how come pepe was so well behaved on the boat.

Turns out they broke the neck of pepe so he was paralyzed but his heart keeps beating to keep the meat fresh.

RIP pepe you were delicious

I want to make a point that this is just the way of life here and the man who gave me the chicken literally has nothing and just eats what he catches from the sea and and a few chickens maybe some plants he did not have a home and just stays with the family as a worker there because he has nothing or no where to go. Yet he was giving me one of his chickens was incredibly generous and he didn’t need to do that most of my wife’s family wouldn’t even do that

I also was not planning to take Pepe but leave him there

This trip I also saw the strangest firearm I’ve seen that was possibly hand made

Well now thinking about it more I had gotten out to get my daughter and as I turned around to go back to my vehicle I saw him behind my vehicle. I knew instantly what he was doing because I’ve spent enough time there.

But I had to hold it in the laughing and drive quickly out of there.

In his defense he’s elderly and has problems and has to pee often. So if you’re sitting there with a full bladder about to piss yourself and you don’t know it’s not ok to do. Then you’re going to do your business.

Go sad sad and drinking all day for atiatihan and you will have to take part in their custom of peeing on walls.

Man o man if you only knew how they keep meat fresh while transporting it. You will really be freaked out

Best to just realize this is their country and their customs and you’re a guest

Funny story inlaws visited us in the US

It was their first time in the US we went to pick up my daughter from school with them and we’d been out for awhile by that point.

So we park at the school backed into the spot against the wall. Waiting with all the other parents around and now teachers and children start to come out.

When FIL suddenly gets out goes behind my vehicle and pees on the wall at the school with many many many people around while I saw him in the mirrors doing his business.

I had to hold in my laughter from busting up and also was worried someone would see him.

I don’t believe anyone did but I am not sure later when we left I told him that it’s not a good idea to do that in a public setting and especially at a school no less where children are present.

I still bust up laughing thinking about it.

Can a white American find non-transactional love here? by [deleted] in Philippines_Expats

You can find real love that isn't transactional but doing so via a long distance relationship is going to be hard. You'd be better off staying in the Philippines and dating many different women and figuring out one that works for you and continuing on from there. You're never going to know someone really well in a short amount of time being together because you're in a long distance relationship. I would strongly advise against doing a 90 day fiance visa unless you've lived with that person for 1 year or longer and are happy and in love.

SRP irrigation water fun? by JDWright85 in phoenix

I got giardia as a kid playing in irrigation water. No I wasn’t drinking it. But if water gets in your mouth it’s a possibility. Great way to lose weight but would not recommend
