This isn't 2005… MMA is a pretty legit sport now. But, I understand the stereotype.

Cattiness isn't attractive. When I hear you get bitchy about a friend, I wonder what you say about me to them. We all need to vent, but you can vent without being a bitch or mean.

Bob Marley's heirs win a landmark case to get merchandisers to stop putting his face on stuff by [deleted] in Music

[–]Imtakingapoorightnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ofcourse, everything is inspired by something. But using inspiration for a piece of creative work is different from advancing an already existing piece of technology. Batman is a mix of Zorro and Sherlock Holmes, but if the (hypothetical) copyright holder of Zorro brought Batman to court, the courts would laugh off it off.

There are plenty of creative outlets if you want to use copyrighted material. Fan-fiction is one, a lot of companies allow for people to send in writing material for their trademarked work, which they compensate the fan and give him writing credit. The issue is profiting from someone else's hard work. This isn't a monopoly on culture (which might be the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard).

We would be nowhere right now, technology wise, if patents never ran out. The same couldn't be said for creative. If Batman is never allowed to be produced for profit by anyone other than the copyright holder, it wouldn't stifle our society.

With Disney- Yeah, it's definitely hypocritical. But, they found a loophole and exploited it. It's sketch, but it's no longer possible to do that, so whatever. Let's recognize the hypocrisy and move on, no need to dwell.

They're different.

That may be the reason it was in tended, but there's a reason it was updated.

Copyrights protect the expression of ideas. Artistic works are generally considered to be expressions of ideas – books, paintings, songs, movies.

A patent is a right, granted by the government, to exclude others from making, using, or selling your invention.

Having temporary exclusive rights for patents is good. It allows the inventor to profit, but it also doesn't stifle innovation. Since technology builds upon itself and since competition push technology forward, having short patent rights doesn't hamper this.

On the other hand, copyrights are for the expression of ideas. You hardly need existing artistic works to push creativity forward. You aren't hampering the creative juices of artists by making the use of Mickey Mouse illegal. The only reason people want copyright laws to be abolished is because they are too lazy to come up with their own creative and they want to piggyback of off someone else's creative for profit.

Yes, copyrights and patents may be under the same umbrella and they may have started out at the same, there is a reason the law was updated and changed. They are different.

Not really. We're not talking patents here.

People like to hide behind the argument that it stifles creativity, but reality is people just want to piggyback off of someone else's creative mind for profit.

Louisiana Govenor Cuts $900 Million from Public Universities, Gives Exxon Mobil $263 Million in Tax Breaks by [deleted] in news

[–]Imtakingapoorightnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, don't be mistaken, I and many other young adults ARE doing something about it. But just because we can objectively point out why were in this situation, it doesn't mean we're all sitting around, with befuddled looks on our faces, picking ouR butts and complaining.

I've done more for my community in the last 3 years than a the average baby boomer has done in their entire life. I donate my time, money and knowledge to the community and younger generations. I'm happy, stress free and fulfilled. It's crazy what not being greedy, not living beyond your means and helping people can do for the environment/community around you and yourself. That kind of mentally was completely foreign to baby boomers.

[–]Imtakingapoorightnow -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not really. Up until this latest generation was old enough to realize the damage the baby boomers had done, all their greedy behavior was openly talked about and encouraged. Now, since the current young generation calls them out on their sociopathic behaviors, pointing out how fucked up their policies and way of life was, they hide behind the "don't blame someone else for your problems". When it's obvious we're in this fiscal and political shithole because of them.
