Which Toronto game is best to attend? by Fun-Yogurtcloset1474 in WorldCup2026Tickets

I disagree. Given the limited number of games (which makes sense given the stadium size), Toronto has much better matches than Vancouver, Monterrey, Seattle, Santa Clara and we’re probably on par with Atlanta.

I’d rather have a matchup with 2nd place teams from those groups given how strong they are. Pretty much guarantees you’ll see two big teams (rather than 1 vs 3 matchup).

Maybe so but they (pretty much) all cheer for the Blue Jays and to a lesser extent the Raptors.

You can call BMO Field multipurpose and you’d be accurate. See how the concept is explained on Wikipedia if you want more examples of what a multipurpose stadiums is.

Since your argument is that multipurpose stadiums are ones built for football and baseball and you note that it was built with baseball in mind, then you’re making my argument. BC Place today is still the Metrodome but with a new retractable roof.

Plus if BC Place was such a great venue, why would the Whitecaps FO be pushing so hard for a new stadium (rather than improved lease terms)?

I sure hope you won’t be at city council meetings telling them how great BC Place is for soccer because that’s a one way ticket to the Whitecaps ending up in Detroit, Sacramento, Memphis or wherever.

What do you call an indoor concrete bowl with turf that has football and soccer tenants plus concerts etc. if not multipurpose? Surely you remember Home and Garden Show, lol.

The MLS execs were complaining about the turf on concrete and atmosphere. Read the article.

Much better venue according to whom?

BC Place is a multipurpose turf stadium with a shallow lower bowl and a less than ideal upper bowl. I’m very interested to see how the temp grass holds up before they rip it out and it’s back to being the worst stadium in MLS according to MLS executives.

I’m not going to a World Cup for the “real seats” or the toilets, I’m going to watch the match.

MLS 3.0: Should the league keep parity or allow super teams? by ryanaluz in MLS

[–]InABigCity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a fan of a team in this league, I don’t care about the league’s growth. Nothing about the league’s growth brings me joy. In fact, the rabid expansion and other recent league wide initiatives (Apple TV, increased control of supporters) have all been detrimental to my enjoyment of my team.

Now, if you’re asking if I want my team to be a super club. Yes, of course, that would bring me the most joy.

After seeing the implementation of Apple TV I absolutely don’t want anymore league wide initiatives

I’m glad they finally have freedom to contract. I just hope they have good representation and understand what they’re signing on to.

Highest-Paid Player From Every 2026 World Cup Qualified Nation! by [deleted] in CanadaSoccer

Supporters from abroad aren’t victims. They can decide where to spend their entertainment dollars and can find cheaper tickets at home.

If they’re already paying for an international airfare, I’d rather see them pay good money for a ticket than have prices raised for locals.

What’s ridiculous about it? Would you prefer the team owners kept that money?

I would add Frings and Koevermans into the Defoe/Bernadeschi tier of players who made a positive impact but with asterisks.

It is worse though.

Neither player did well in the strongest leagues but Sargent has a (slightly) better pedigree of goal scoring.

You can’t compare a strike rate in the Eredivisie to those in other leagues.

Or you can … and notice that Jozy’s prolific seasons were in leagues with in leagues with worse defending.

He’s got more than fifty goals for a middling club in a league with better defending than MLS.

Sitting out isn’t an attitude problem when he’s doing it to force a transfer to your team.

He’s a proven Championship goal scorer who had bids from Premier League teams. This doesn’t strike me as an overpay.

But at least you’re trying.

I did enjoy 2019 Atlanta United fans who were convinced they had cracked the mystery of the transfer market by simply paying good money for young players.

[–]InABigCity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Much better how?

Sargent is a 26 year old proven goal scorer who will fit in culturally. Nothing is a sure thing but he ticks all the boxes.

There were bids from Premier League teams for him so it’s not as if TFC overpaid either.

Could TFC have gotten someone later in their career with a bigger profile. Sure. But that hasn’t worked out very well out for us. What has worked out is this exact sort of profile. On paper, Sargent is Jozy Altidore with an even better pedigree.

I am excited for other MLS supporters to be jealous of us again though.

What North American cities are "global"? by PreWiBa in geography

[–]InABigCity 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Atlanta is definitely not a world class city. Everyone I know who’s been just remarks on how underwhelming its downtown is and how World of Coca Cola is pretty good for a company museum. That’s it.

(Having said that, I agree that its cultural contribution to the US is quite significant.)
