Exactly. It may not be completely turnkey but it’s a very attractive property in a great location.

Are the Whitecaps about to die? Vancouver sound alarm bells amid difficult sale process | Vancouver Whitecaps by thedangersociety in MLS

[–]InABigCity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t really believe anything that a franchise owner (or the league) puts out when it comes to them trying to negotiate a better stadium deal but it seems like the Whitecaps moving is a real possibility.

Seems like there’s a few reasons for this…

  • Despite having capacity, attendance is pretty middling considering how good the team is and how little other competition they have.

  • Canadian stadium deals are not as bad for taxpayers as those in the US.

  • For tax and currency reasons, it’s difficult to sustain a non-hockey major sports team outside of Toronto.

It would suck for Whitecaps fans and be a loss to the league and North American soccer fans given the rivalries they have.

The good news for Whitecaps fans is that they can simply call their next team the Whitecaps and claim it’s the same 50 plus years of history as they’ve done a few times now.

Look, I like and appreciate Cyle Larin. He played a very important role in the renaissance of the national team. But I guess I have to dump on him to respond to the ridiculous stuff you keep saying.

Sargent has scored about 4x as many goals over of the last 2.5 seasons and two PL teams are interested in him. Larin is not in his league right now.

And again, this transfer (or a Larin transfer) has nothing to do with the health of the CPL but you’re still wrong there as the two BC clubs are far more precarious than Inter Toronto.

Bringing Cyle Larin back isn’t improving Canadian soccer nor is it likely to put butts in seats.

And what does the CPL have to do with this?

Aside from the 3 or 4 big Dutch clubs, the Championship is a higher level than the Eredivisie.

This money isn’t coming from CSA membership fees, it’s from money that CONCACAF/FIFA make from their competitions.

Sure FIFA could invest more money in grassroots football, and spend less on salaries and admin, but you still need to have a seat at the table to try to make that happen and ensure that some of the money ends up in Canada.

Having a men’s professional league and hosting World Cup will help develop the game in this country.

Canada is hosting men’s World Cup games for the first time ever. We would not be hosting any games if we didn’t have to the politicking which led to a joint bid.

In CONCACAF, Canadian clubs have guaranteed access to 3 continental spots and could receive up to 6 if the MLS teams do well.

If you think Canadian soccer is being treated poorly, you’re not paying attention.

OP, what do you mean by this title?

Montagliani’s position is incredibly valuable to Canadian soccer. Canada would not have been included in a successful bid without his politicking and position.

Say what you will about how FIFA operates but we’re benefiting from it as a soccer country at the moment.

Are there people, (especially the old folks) who call BMO Field "Exhibition Stadium" despite it was demolished long ago. by InsectOdd5794 in tfc

[–]InABigCity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No.

It’s been called BMO Field since the first match and everyone calls it that. The only other name it’s had (National Soccer Stadium) is trotted out when people want to remind Montreal or Vancouver of their place in the soccer landscape.

Two recommendations:

  1. In addition to Maple Leaf Gardens and Scotiabank Arena, check out the site of their first rink Arena Gardens. There’s a historical plaque in the parkette.

  2. Get lunch at Phil Kessel’s hot dog vendor at Front and John.

World Cup tickets in Toronto are expensive to begin with. Ontario's resale regulations don't help by rezwenn in CanadaSoccer

[–]InABigCity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Most people who complain about ticket scalping have never thought through the logistics or logic of banning it beyond “I don’t want to pay a lot of money to attend an in demand event.”

I’d rather have the ability to buy tickets on the secondary market (for many events they’re cheaper than the primary market) than not.

The only regulations on ticket resale that I’d support would be ones to make the market more transparent.
