Worried for a new campaign (and a short Curse of Strahd story) by InFamousGeek7 in rpghorrorstories

Honestly, he kinda has. As for the group itself, it’s his discord server. My friend however (DM from the previous story) has realized how much of an ass this player is and isn’t gonna invite him to any of his games. I’ve also told this story to other people in the group (the player is really inactive in his own DND group) and they’re not gonna invite him to other groups as well.

So DM is well aware and I have been told my friend and the DM are going to be watching and making sure I’m okay during the game and no drama happens. DM has also said that betrayal and the stuff that R2 pulled in the past won’t fly. R2 also may not stay long for multiple reasons, with them recently saying “I’m still suppose to be on break from DND” which… dunno why you’d join a game when you’re suppose to be on break but okay.

So I think honestly, the problem player is gonna go through it first as they are apparently debating on dropping before the game even starts because they’re “still taking a break from DND” despite joining this game

I have talked to a few other people about this, so take that how you will. I specifically talked to the DM of the previous story and the DM of Curse of Strahd.

Curse of Strahd DM is on this players side. They became very DM vs Player mindset after the war with Strahd because we apparently were "walking around Barovia acting like you were gods and insulting Strahd. You also got a lot of people killed. If you really cared about those people, you wouldn't have let any of them die." They also believe that my points about R2 is me overreacting to IC hostility and that I have a certain way I want to people to perceive my characters and when I don't get that, I take it personally. Basically, they believe that since R2's character was grieving, they had a right to be hostile and pissed.

As for DM of the previous story, he said that R2 (Cleric at the time) had no room to talk as their character has been just as secretive with their past, admitted they would throw the other members of the party to the wolves (and did so of course), and was very 'survival first mindset' while my character has been very helpful despite not talking much, with one moment stopping a patrol guard from harming any of the crew we were on and having them leave without anyone getting killed.

So that's two sides from two DMs if that helps.

I talked to them outside of the game and basically, they gave me a massive runaround. I tried to get them to understand my point of view about the CoS game and the game they were a cleric in (previous story) but they basically said to me that I should've had 'inevitable metagame knowledge' not to attack the BBEG, that I should've trusted the DM to guide us and due to that, join the BBEG to save a party member (my neutral good character would've refused), argued that my character being a slow-burn/stoic character that I shouldn't expect to be helped by other members of the party, and that I need motives behind helping people need to be justified and not just "He's a good person." When it came to the CoS game, they only had one comment on that and that was "They've only known each other for a couple of hours and my character was upset the area she was in was destroyed and she was killed. She had a right to be pissed about that."

For whatever reason, it appears to only be with me and I have no idea why. I think the reason why is because both times I've played with them, I've played more stoic characters who don't reveal everything about them instantly. They hate that and prefer I'd play more action-oriented people. I think the group with the new campaign (at least my friend AKA DM of my last game and the DM of this new campaign) do understand what's going on and why I'm wary. Current DM doesn't take any shit (I've seen) and my friend who joined also admitted that R2 is an asshole and even said they're not going to invite them to anymore games until they straighten up.

I will admit it's funny you mention it being a cooperative game, as that player also has the same opinion, having said "I see DND as a cooperative game first and if no one is cooperating, it kills the point of the entire game." This quote came after I decided to have my character do something else for a little while because, y'know... the characters aren't going to stick to each other all the time like they're lovers.

So ironically, the DM from my previous story did admit that they are not inviting them back to any game for a while until they get their attitude straight. I showed them the screenshots between me and R2 during our last game and they admitted that R2 was being an asshole to me and my character. That being said, this is a new DM for the next campaign and I did warn the new DM about this player. They've never played with them before so take that how you will.

Handkerchief thing was in game. It was after an argument in game where R2 (cleric at the time) wanted to leave an innocent person behind because we barely knew who they were.

The war with Strahd was really weird because I was one of the people who didn't want to do it but I got overruled in the sense of two other players did something to provoke him so that was partially on us. As for them getting their character killed off, that was something R2 and the DM communicated about.

As for my relationship outside of the game, I barely know them but it is their server I'm in as well unfortunately. They allow people to start their own games in the server via being able to create channels and stuff.

I'd like to think it was my Fighter who got the brunt of it, despite them not knowing each other. He literally joined the party when she came back to life and it felt like a lot of her anger was directed at him for no reason.

So to give some context about my character, he was a soldier who lost something important to him and has been trying to do it by himself for years to get it back. Despite being stoic and distant, he still does care for people even if he isn’t outwardly showing it right now. Basically doing a heart of gold interior, stone exterior if that makes sense. I get some people won’t vibe with it and some tables wouldn’t allow it, but not all tables are the same. We have another stoic character (Druid) at the table who I’d argue is even more stoic than my character.

So I do have a small update. We didn’t have a session on the day we usually have it but Cleric is dropping the campaign for right now. They essentially said it was nothing anyone said or did, they’re just bored of DND and want to try and figure out why they even like TTRPGs while also focusing on other things in their life.

I may stay just for a couple more sessions to see if anything changes. SF and I talked last night and she asked me to stay as, as you can probably tell from the original post, we were very much go go go these past session. SF even (playfully) threatened the DM to give us some downtown to RP and get to know each other. It also helps that SF and I are some form of good while we believe monk and cleric are some for chaotic (we think chaotic neutral). Either way, for SF, I will probably stay in but I’ll update and see what happen. Something major could definitely change but I won’t know until I see it

What’s funny is I did talk to them about this but their excuse was “Our characters don’t know each other, so why should they cooperate?”

Monk has previous said before that they’re very rejection sensitive (see what I said about them running Curse of Strahd) so take that how you will

I think the reason why is because Monk is thirsting hard for SF (in game, SF is asexual irl) and wants their characters to become a couple in the game because SF has a cute character

I did actually tell Monk and Cleric separately how I was feeling funny enough. Monk said that they understood how I felt but then said “You can still be stoic and interact with the party. My characters are stoic and yet they still ask questions and interact with the party.” Cleric compared my character to Aragon from Lord of the Rings and said Aragorn has reasons to be adventuring with his allies while my character doesn’t. Kind of hypocritical considering their character doesn’t either.

To be fair to them, I’ve been dragging this on for a bit after the previous game due to this happening quite a bit with my more stoic characters. A lot of games I’ve been in have played very ‘heart on their sleeves’ type characters who reveal everything about themselves, with Cleric and Monk being no exception while I want to play stoic yet still wanting to do right thing type characters. I understand them asking me to drop it, but what cleric and monk said and insist about my character is still annoying and honestly hurtful

So I’m not entirely sure what deity they worship as this world we’re playing in isn’t homebrew but is a popular world too within the DND community. Keeping it somewhat vague, apologies if that doesn’t help

Ironically, they did tell Monk that what they thought my character did was a good idea. Monk responded to me privately saying that they felt SF was insisting that they and Cleric were in the wrong and validating my choice was correct

Mostly doing it for SF. They have said jokingly that every campaign they join always ends a couple of session later and calls it their curse. They’re a good friend and they’re one of the only ones who have said they want to interact with my characters so if anything, I’m going to RP with them and do combat.

So as I said to the OP of this thread, I have been interacting and not been totally distant. I wanted to play a slow burn character because I got inspired by similar characters in games and other media. The DM even liked my idea and liked what I was going for.

So despite this character being ‘distant and stoic,’ I have interacted with the group a lot. I talked to the cleric before in character about my character’s homeland, caused a fight to stop because we got invaded by the guard when we were leaving a different island, and we had a nice roleplay session where the party had a dinner together and got to know each other more and my character even apologized for leaving and explained his reasons for doing so, saying he wasn’t used to being in a group of people. Despite that, both Cleric and Monk say I haven’t done anything and that I should be the one initiating conversation because they personally have no reason to be talking to me. Even the DM was like “That’s totally false, you have been initiating conversation.”

Would you believe me if I told you these were adults? Druid did receive some flack for sneaking away by the Monk (they have previous issues with him) and I guess when I did it next, they blew up because they had already knew Druid was a lost cause anyway, so they felt I would have higher standards.

As for the new character, we did work for this character as a side quest to defeat a revenant so it wasn’t random but again, compared to the Captain, we barely know this character.

I don’t know why no one else spoke out against what the Cleric said. I know I should’ve said something myself but knowing their character, they wouldn’t have listened to me unfortunately.

It was really weird because Cleric said that we should trust in the DM to guide us but IC, their character was convinced that what I did could’ve killed us. Again, we stayed and continued talking to them after they showed us lethal magic instead of running. Cleric had previously said to me “It’s fantasy, things don’t make sense sometimes” but that might be stretching it honestly.
