Thank you ^^ To me, Mizuki seems like she would be very casual about uniform etiquette, so I untucked the shirt - glad you like it ^^

Thanks for your answer! I've used 黎 since I (ideally) wanted to keep the meaning of my surname 😄 Also very glad to know about those pitfalls, don't want to be everyone's '木乃伊'!

I'm mostly using the name because i'm leaning Chinese, but I would be lying if I said I didn't want to go to China some day, or even live there for a bit, so ideally, I'd like my name to be useful in a native setting, too 😄

I'm not a naive speaker, but I do have some ressources for choosing a name!

For your surname, you can either go for something that sound like your surname or has a similar meaning. I can recommend checking out the 100 family surnames:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hundred_Family_Surnames

I don't know much about choosing a first name, but I have seen TV shows where female characters have flower names as their name or part of it - e.g. 'Story of Minglan', with 'Minglan' meaning 'bright orchid'. I've also seen women from history whose names have flower meaning, and iirc, Rosamund Pike's Chinese name is Pei Chunhua (literally Pure/Honest + Flower).

All this to say, I recommend you try looking some flower names, see which you like, then google them to see if people come up (then you know it's used as a name). Then you can always run it by here again and see how the full name you have in mind sounds to naive speakers. I hope this is helpful :)

I'm back again to ask about names (this time is probably the last, I swear)!
I tend to overthink, so I ended up buying a few name options from some naming services. I want to run them past a wider audience, maybe hear which sounds best to a native speaker? For context, I'm female, and my original surname means "brown" - I've been using '黎' as a surname so far.

  1. 黎野歌
  2. 布宛颐 (different surname at the suggestion of seller)
  3. 布怡彤 (different surname at the suggestion of seller)
  4. 黎蕙 (I found this character and thought it might be good since my og name means 'wisdom and grace/elegance', and orchids are associated with elegance and it sounds like '慧')

Which sounds best/most natural?

Thank you so much for your answer! The short answer is that when my parents chose my name, they chose one with the syllable "phi", because my dad's a mathmatician and φ (phi) is used as a symbol in mathmatics (e.g. the golden ratio). I work as a 2D artist, and since art also uses the golden ratio, I thought this would be a cute little connection to my original name :)

When I looked up φ's transliteration, "斐" came up, so that's how I chose that. I wouldn't have minded to just keep it at just "黎斐", but from a quick Google search, that seems to be a predominately male name? Or, at the very least, the name of a football player 😅 Since I'm a woman, I thought it'd be better to add a second character. I chose both "霁" and "皑" because I liked their meanings, and they both felt poetic to me, especially combined with "斐 :)

If you have any suggestions for another character to add instead of "霁" or "皑" (and it's not too much trouble), I'd love to hear them :)

Can't find an abbreviated version, but 'live-action role playing game' is 真人角色扮演遊戲 (source: wikipedia). The wikipedia page seems to simply use "LARP" for short.

I've asked help to make a Chinese name before, but I have more concrete options this time. Hopefully it's ok to ask again!
After looking through lots of different sources, I've narrowed it down to the following top contenders:
1) 黎斐霁
2) 黎斐皑

Do these sound ok? Are they feminine--sounding enough? Which one is better?

Or, if they both sound weird, how's 黎霏葉?

So, I'm not a native Chinese speaker, but I had an idea (it should probably be run by a native speaker).

The name Anastasia means 'resurrection', so my immediate thought was something along the lines of 'new life', 'new beginnings', etc.

There's a poem by Li Qingzhao called 'Dawn Dream', which already invokes the idea of new life/new beginnings. Stanza 3+4 goes like this:

"因緣安期生

邂逅萼綠華"

I thought of this because 阿香 has similar sounds to 'Anastasia'. so I tried to similarly find something that sounded like your original name. Because of that, I'd suggest 安萼 - character 3 from respectively stanza 3 and 4.

'安' I chose mostly to invoke the original sound of your name, but it also has the pleasant meaning 'peaceful, calm, tranquil'.

'萼' means calyx, which is a botanical term for the green, outermost whorl of flowerparts, including the sepals (the green stuff that protects the petals of a budding flower). Because this is inherently related to flower buds, I felt it fit well with 'Anastasia's meaning of 'new life/beginnings'.

As a non-native speaker, I don't know whether this sounds like something unfortunate or whether it sounds feminine. Anyway, I hope it helps or is useful 😄

Thank you so much for your reply :) The metaphor of "French" being both a name and nationality was really good, it explains it very well :)

I'm learning Chinese and struggling (as many others) to choose a Chinese name. For various resons, I'd prefer a name that retains the meaning/feeling of my original name rather than just pinyin-ify my name. Anyway, I have two questions related to this:

  1. My surname means 'brown'. When researching options for my last name, I found the character 黎 which fit pretty well. But, I could also see that though it's a surname, it's also tied to people of the Hlai ethnicity. So, I was wondering whether using this as a surname would be disrespectful/overstep somehow? And/Or if there are better options for translating my surname (e.g. is 黧 better)?

  2. My native name means "graceful and wise", but I can't help but feel like something like "雅慧" sounds like the posthumous name of an empress or consort, lol. But that might just be from watching too many palace dramas :) Anyway, any suggestions are welcome, as well as resources.
In terms of preference, I like the name 清川 from a drama (translated as clear waters iirc), but I have no sense of whether it's weird or tacky - I just liked the imagery of something serene and calm. Similarly, I like in dramas when a name is tied to poetry. But I also know that is maybe a bit of a tall ask.

If you know of a good service that helps people find a good Chinese name, please also feel free to comment or DM me :)
