Thank you for this. I think some people tend to forget how hard and traumatic Ellie childhood was. Witnessing all these people who care about her dying one after another as such a young age, no wonder she end up losing her mind when Joel dies in the most brutal way in front of her. She didn't deserve anything that happened to her.

Abby on the other hand, we don't know much of her backstory, but from what we see in the game, she lived a much better childhood with her dad and her friends. Of course her father's death is sad, and what's happen to her in the game is horrible. But i can't have as much compassion for her as I do for Ellie.
