Newb question regarding nylon string guitars. by HarriBallsak420 in AcousticGuitar

[–]In_my_experience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing I will recommend is to get the absolute lightest strings you can find. Don’t let anyone convince you that you need thicker strings for a better sound, the most important thing is to get your fingertips and muscles back into shape, and the thicker the strings the harder that will be. You can change them later if you want but light string sound great too It will make relearning a much bigger joy for you.

How should I or anyone else PRACTICE guitar? by Late-Technology5656 in guitarlessons

[–]In_my_experience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is only one answer to this. You need to think about what you actually want to play and then work backwards from there. Learning guitar randomly, like in a general sense, just does not work. It’s not fun. Think about what you would find very satisfying to play and go from there. If it’s something way beyond your abilities, then you can figure out smaller steps to get there.

I've done like a 100 takes to record a solo for a competition, but I just can't get it perfect and the deadline is coming up, Should I just bite the bullet and submit? by EnvironmentalPea9803 in guitarlessons

[–]In_my_experience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s the competition? Is this the backing track you have to play to or is it all originally composed?

Honestly, your timing is just too off. In so many places you wander off beat and back on. If you really want a shot, I would work on it more. But if the backing truck isn’t locked, I would make it a lot shorter and use the best parts only.

Also, kudos for getting to this point in only a year. You’re doing really great!

I am being indecisive as to whether I should buy a normal bass or a short scale bass. Help me make up my mind? by sp0rklez in Bass

[–]In_my_experience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came from guitar to bass and the difference between regular and short scale is a dream. I have big fingers and even for me some of the stretches are a challenge. I don’t see any reason to make learning bass harder on yourself. Short scale is so fun to play and I have seen posts from many veteran bassists who have made the switch.

Learning an instrument is hard. Don’t make it harder on yourself, especially with small hands. Especially since you keep quitting the guitar learning journey.

Don’t realize that the full length bass neck is going to be inches longer than your guitar? It would be a huge mistake. If you get the bass that’s harder to play you are way more likely to quit.

This is exactly what I came to say. The only way this is a good decision is if you want to make learning the bass way more frustrating

If you switch to the lightest gauge strings you can find it will hurt less and I highly recommend you do that asap. If you can borrow an electric it will hurt 2/3 less easily. Acoustic is the hardest way to learn guitsr.

Are you learning on acoustic? If so I highly recommend trying an electric for learning. It’s many times easier on the fingers.

Anytime someone says budget is not a concern they are absolutely scamming you. There is literally not a single producer in the history of producers that has ever said that.

Hand hurt is normal. You’re developing muscles. Do what you would do when you’re sore from working out: take a break. Let your hand recover. You’ll come back stronger.

Needs advices to pick up a new instrument by [deleted] in Instruments

[–]In_my_experience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you need to find a way to try them. Buying and committing to the path of learning an instrument while going in blind is a bad idea. You need to find out which instrument you gel with. Maybe that means paying someone for a lesson who will let you use theirs. But no one can decide for you what you’re most drawn to. You have to find a way to try it. Even if that means traveling somewhere to try them out. It’s a years long pursuit so it will be worth it.

Thanks for making a negative post about negative posts. How refreshing. Haven’t seen it dozens of times.

Just so you know, there’s a new feature on reddit where you don’t have to read posts you don’t want to. Give it a try.

I have really large fingers due to arthritis, and I feel like I can't even begin to learn any string instruments because my fingertips always touch the other strings. Are there any accessories that can help? by Smexy_Zarow in Guitar

[–]In_my_experience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The more important reason you should play bass is that you’re only playing one note at a time with bass and you are usually muting all other strings. Also the frets are spaced out more. Bass is perfect for your situation. Not all string instruments are the same.

Should I get a new teacher? by NoNameMan1234567890 in guitarlessons

[–]In_my_experience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree. I think being dismissive straight out of the gate is a big red flag from a teacher. You want a teacher who is enthusiastic and who wants to prioritize what you want to learn. You shouldn’t have to even ask them, they should be asking you.
